Someone suggested Huel for a protein shake so spent some time Memorial Day weekend to put together a comparison
Have stomach issues with whey or milk so these shakes are 100% plant based FYI.
Compared Protein, Vitamins/Minerals and lastly Misc ingredients that make a difference.
Protein Sources
Huel: Pea protein + faba bean protein which gives a dual source that covers your essential amino acids.
OWYN: Proprietary blend of pea protein + organic pumpkin seed protein + flax seed oil. The pumpkin seed protein adds zinc, magnesium
Vitamins & Minerals
This is where Huel has the advantage.
Huel's made as a meal replacement with 27 vitamins and minerals including vitamin D, B12, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium,
OWYN has some but doesn't load up. Contains iron and potassium. No vitamin D, little calcium and no real micro nutrients. It's a protein shake, not a meal replacement.
Ingredients Worth Noting
Huel: No artificial sweeteners, artificial colors or flavors, non-GMO, gluten-free.
The higher sugar (7g) comes from natural sources.
OWYN: Sweetened with monk fruit extract and stevia so zero sugars (bonus if watching blood sugar).
Also contains Gellan Gum- a common thickener/stabilizer but is generally considered safe. The Natural Flavor listing is vague as always.
Surprisingly clean otherwise with their added greens blend (spinach, kale, broccoli) which is a nice touch.
Bottom Line- Personal Opinion
Pick Huel: For a full meal replacement with complete micro nutrients. The 400 calories and 27 vitamins/minerals make it an actual meal, not just a protein hit.
Pick OWYN: If you have a solid eating plan and just want a high-protein, low cal shake to hit your macros. It's more of a pure protein supplement.
Both are certified vegan with no animal products and solid protein quality.
Neither has sketchy artificial sweeteners
The Numbers *this chart was harder than heavy leg day
200 cals more on Huel getting taken up by 7 more grams of fat and sugar and 27 grams of carbs. (okay technically a few more grams of fiber)
Let me know what you think!!
