Alright fellas, I need some wisdom from the over-50 crew. Every time I start making progress in bodybuilding, my body taps me on the shoulder (literally) and says, ‘Not so fast.’ I’m dealing with a partial tear in my left rotator cuff, a cranky right SI joint that likes to shear, and chronic elbow tendinitis. Basically, my joints throw tantrums every time my muscles start growing.

I know I probably need more PT work, lighter weights, higher reps, and slower tempo instead of chasing big ego lifts. But here’s my real question: has anyone here actually managed to pack on ~20 lbs of muscle mass after 50 (yes, with some PED help) while also dropping body fat—without sacrificing your joints to the Iron Gods?

I don’t buy into the ‘no pain, no gain’ motto. I’m looking for ‘no pain, still gain.’ Would love to hear what’s worked for you—programming, rehab, recovery tricks, PED protocols, mindset—anything that helped you grow without wrecking yourself.

And I already do PT, take most known joint supplements, use a brace, tried TB-500 and BPC-157 (didn't help much), tried Deca (helped temporarily)....

p.s. I was only able to start training back again by doing underhand grip on vertical and horizontal pulls. I still cannot use a barbell or do overhead press except very light. My biggest chest gains come from fly machine. Biggest back gains have come from the underhand grip. So many exercises I loved I cannot do now: overhead db press, barbell press (I only use machine now), side planks because they hurt my shoulder (I use obliques machine now), etc.... Thanks guys

Bpc157 will be ur best friend!!
Also fuck overhead presses of any kind foe now.
Can make plenty of progress with light dumbells/cables.
Forget any heavy lifting at all right now.
Ya said ur really just getting back?I started back few years ago and had to go light, slow and steady.
After my body was used to it once again and plenty of bpc157 for shoulder, knee wrist etc pain subsided and body got stronger I upped the ante!
Over and over again!!
My personal preference is being able to handle weight I'm lifting not attempting to lift weight.
I'm to old for PRs and ego lifting!
Nothing good ever comes out of it except time away from gym cause of an injury or reinsurance of something

After being out of the game for 20 years and starting back up at 50, I will say that at least for me, the mass is much harder to come by now, even with gear. I got pretty damn big in my 20’s and early 30’s and it wasn’t that difficult at all. Now, adding mass is a challenge even when everything is dialed in. It’s incredibly frustrating, however, that doesn’t mean you can’t progress and build an awesome physique. Go find my “one year journey” post to see what I was able to do in just a year with having everything dialed in. I ain’t never gonna be anywhere near as big as most of the guys here, but that’s okay. You can still be an absolute badass really at any age man.

I did it but I had some muscle memory and most of my joints could still handle the load. In my 60s it's way harder. When the joints go, like you said, lower weights, higher reps, time under tension, less ego. Find a good stretching routine and do it every time you are in the gym after your weight training and cardio is done. That has been key throughout my life. Pick your compounds wisely. For me in my 50s Test/EQ/NPP were the ones for putting on mass. 300/300/300 mg. Don't push doses. No need.

Is it possible you got some bunk BPC15/TB500? I've recently started it and I think it's a miracle worker, my elbow pain basically disappeared. I wish you luck, keep at it.

Its very possible to gain size at 50.

Forget the barbells and stick with machines. Perform movements that dont cause you significant pain or problems. Take a look at frequency and overall volume as well. These may need to be adjusted.
At 51yrs old i 2nd this!

So the NoHurtNoBigShirt motto isn’t for you either ha ha. Like most are saying I use more cables machines now and really work the muscle. I can go heavy on days I feel stronger than other days and it’s a lot safer. And again do the exercises that don’t cause pain. For shoulders you can work the shit out of them with side laterals and rear dealt exercises and have some decent shoulders without doing overhead presses. And do different angles. Really concentrate on good form I mean, perform the exercise the way it feels good to you. And feel the muscle your training.

Cialis helps with a good pump. I take 5 to 10 mg pre-workout and do the safer compounds like Test and Primo. Primo is hard to find now but there’s a few sponsors here that still have it if you can afford it and look for the recent lab test results. Also Masteron if your hair doesn’t start falling out and TBol, Anavar and Proviron can be used with less side effects and are healthier for older guys. But I don’t use orals for that long. Those are most of the compounds I use sometimes NPP or Deca those can be used to ease the joint pain. I blast and cruise and at 5’11” 245 to 250 lbs I cruise at 300 test.

But to answer your real question no I haven’t added 20 pounds. It’s just slow & steady gains bro.

And rest and recovery is a must now and oral BPC 157 is good for your stomach having good digestion is also very important! Stay Swell and Swole!

I am 65. One of my 3 goals by age 50 was to lose muscle as slow as i can as sarcopenia is a real thing. For those that have not been a heard trainer in the r earlier years or are using a big enough dose of PEDS then some growth can happen. My second biggest goal has been to not injure myself. which requires me to train the way i can, not the way i want. I have already had a few surgeries to fix past poor choices. Goal #3 has been to have my chest enter a room before my belly that is an ongoing challenge as well!

Age is just a number... If your using hormones that put you at a 14 yr old boys test levels, your gonna grow as long as your intake of protein is sufficient. The older you get the harder it is to process protein due
to AGE related kidney issues (non life threatening). Happens to all us old farts.

That’s why it’s a good idea to take digestive enzymes and stuff like betaine HCL before meals. Helps old guts breakdown proteins more efficiently.

I use the Betadine HCL+ Pepsim particularly for the digestion of eggs as my consumption is close to 30 a day. But I take a crap with each meal.

Bro, respectfully, at 50⬆️. Consider training for longevity, mobility, flexibility and last but not least strength, these things will add quality of life
Size will add zero quality of life.

Desires are not always wise, intuitively training for those things that add quality is wise, imho
think* lean and mean bro haha

^^^ This is good advice ^^^

Nobody batted an eye at a crap with every meal, sounded about right with the amount you eat. :ROFLMAO:
Thats not a bad thing brother... to crap after each meal is a positive sign of a healthy GI system especially with your grocery intake haha

I’d say you can have both. At 56 I just finished a cycle and while I’m not certain how much mass I have added yet, I can tell you it was an appreciable amount and noticeable for sure. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and am more capable than I ever was. Keep the lifting smart, nutrition on point, and use proper form and no stupid shit. Couple that with consistency and discipline and you can still grow. I feel that the best is yet to come for me. I’m nowhere near hitting a ceiling in my growth. In my opinion.

Im 63 with Stage IV cancer and absolutely refuse to stop lifting weights. My body is beat to hell with treatments but I still feel guilty if I miss a workout. Never give up no matter what.
A good pre-workout drink fixes anything!
Train around injuries if you have to.

Bro, most of anything on this forum won’t discourage me. I’ve got thick skin for the most part and I’m confident in the person I am. I get what you’re trying to say and it’s not wrong. But for me, I couldn’t have climbed out of the shithole life I had put myself in by being afraid to take calculated risks and take my life back knowing that the check engine light could, and it did plenty of times, come on and the wheels did come off a few times. I have faced adversity along the way more times than I could count. I am today. But I refuse to let any of that dictate my future. And I won’t stop until I’ve reached my goals know g there is risk in this lifestyle. Sometimes it’s a fine line we walk. My choice is to push the limits of what’s possible, and prove that what seems to be impossible to some, will not deter me from trying. If the smoke rolls and I smell oil at some point. I will know that I gave it everything I had and left nothing on the table to have regrets about. Stay tuned, I think the best is yet to come for me. I know this much. I’m going to find out.
