We have seen members this week get their proton email taken over by hackers and scammed. They have attempted to scam the members and the sources.
You need to login to Protonmail with a browser, not the app, then enable 2FA which is short for two factor authentication. You need to download the google Authenticator app to do this, it will generate the keys you need to enable 2FA.

If you use the same password on multiple forums etc then one of those could be hacked and they got your proton email and password there. ASF has high end security and is monitored by a security company so it’s safe here but other forums could have weak security.

Also there’s a very convincing phishing email going around. Looks like it’s from Protonmail staff saying you need to respond or your account will be deleted. It’s fake and from a scamme.

People don't take this lightly.

Don't click on hyperlinks from people you don't know, Don't get into a habit of reading forwarded emails to you, and protect others by not forwarding.

Just use caution.

It's highly recommended to create one specific email, and use that only for all of your personal business if you know what I mean.

I have been saying this for over a year. Use a browser not the app.
The first email we received from this guy he was trying to blackmail, if we didnt pay him $600 he would shut us down. The second email we received. He must have hacked into 302's email and sent an email claiming he was in dire straits and needed money urgently.
He either has bad english or his talk to text is a bit off.
To all other sponsors that have not experienced this guy yet.We have received 15 emails, claiming payment made and did not receiving tracking. After I tell them to get in touch with a board representative. These people just disappear.

Great advice (IT systems engineer here) especially this time of year there's a marked in crease in email and social media hacks around the holiday seasons. In case anyone wants/needs to get there for Proton mail, I noted some simple steps noted below.

** some may even consider 2 password mode in Proton Mail at the same settings as noted below 2 password mode calls for 1 password to sign into account, and another different password to encrypt your data. Also here is a link to the full Proton 2FA how to page: How to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Proton Account | Proton **

1) Log into Proton mail via web browser
2) Click on your username/pic top right corner
3) Click Settings
4) On left hand sidebar with the Settings page click on Account and Password
5) Under Two-Factor Authentication click on desired form of 2FA
6) For this example I will note choosing Authenticator App once you do that it opens a wizard, follow that along and download and install the Google Auth app if you don't already have. Once you have the app simply tap on + sign and you simply scan the code and it should ask you to verify the code you see in the app and you're good to go

Great advice. Enabled 2fa on mine and nuked all my old emails.

Also do NOT keep any contacts in Proton's address book. Paste in the email address you want to send email to rather. In addition nuke all emails after you confirm and complete your order transaction.

Above all, doublecheck the email addy you sending to to make sure it's correct!!!

When sending email to sponsors for your lists and orders via Proton/Tuta be sure you have the correct email and that it's spelled correctly. If in doubt ask a rep for that sponsor!!!

It's okay if it's none of my business but does anybody know what sponsor they're pretending to be

It appears that these incidents are currently happening at random, affecting multiple sponsors rather than a single specific one. However, due to the extremely sensitive nature of this information, I am not authorized to disclose any further details. To protect confidentiality and security, we will refrain from providing any information regarding these hackers/scammers, especially if they are part of our community. We do not want to provide them with any indication of their success in targeting specific sources. We are implementing safety nets and multiple layers of security, which are highly recommended for all individuals reading this.

So the email that said I won free gear, I shouldn't have clicked that link

Once you’re hacked you can email the exact address of a source or whoever and the hacker will get those emails not the intended recipient, you’ll also receive emails from the sources email that they didn't send and the ones they did send if there was ever a legitimate communication between the two won’t reach you.

Once your account is hacked you’re pretty much fucked unless you’re very very wary. I’d advice to only deal with sources you got a history with around this time that you’ve gotten to know how they communicate etc. any “off “ email coming from them and bail. Can always double check through the forum before sending any funds.

Here is the 1st email you will receive from China. I have super duper extra intense force 9 high alert hacking device so I'm good...it also stops unwanted pregnancies 🤪 😜 🤪

Thank you for the heads up bro this is important to know.

I also hope everyone knows on proton mail when you write the subject line that people can see it it’s vulnerable.

But the content is encrypted.

Good to know.

Need to bump this. The scammer is still active and intercepting proton emails. Be careful
This is factual, people, if you suspect that anything is suspicious. Please report it.
Also in the event, double check all emails that you correspond with. Sometimes the scammers will make the slightest adjustment that you may not notice.

The reason being that if a hacker takes over your Proton account they will have access to your contact list if you saved any directly into the contact book in Proton. Best idea is to keep your contact list outside Proton, and paste in the addy from your computer when composing a message in Proton.
