I don’t understand why Paddy didn’t go straight for grappling. You can see if there records Justin primarily wins by KO and Paddy wins by Sub so I don’t understand why he didn’t go for what works for him to win fights. Instead he played right into Justin’s game by standing in front of him and boxing him knowing Justin is known for banging. Seems like a bad game plan to me.

Fuckin' kid took some shots, rocked so bad in the 1st round I thought it
was over. Not the best fighter in the LW division but whatta fuckin' chin.
I thought he was gonna get finished in every round, except maybe the third? Looked like Justin took that one off. Seems like he ate a shot that would've put everyone else out cold in every other round

I was just watching all the commentators and UFC fighters take on the fight.
Everybody said Paddy should have taken it to the ground.
Bad game plan. Stand and punch.... with a PUNCHER. (y)

Wasn't Justin an All American wrestler?

Yes, and he did stuff some of Paddys attempts.
Still though, Paddy is a black belt in BJJ. He should have taken it to
the ground after the 1st 150 shots he took in the 1st 2 rounds...lol

Never stand and bang with a banger...

I bet Pimblett's face today looks like a black pumpkin.

Yes Sir! I know he has the wrestling background but how often have we seen him use it. And when he does he typically grinds into a ground and pound rather than being more of a submission specialist. There were times Justin would just let his opponents up knowing he had the advantage on his feet. Justin has like 2-4 submissions on his record I think without looking it up. He had become much more of a stand up brawler. Whereas Paddy has like 2-4 KO/TKO finishes and all other victories by submission. With there records being opposite like that I would have thought Paddy would have worked harder to get Justin on the ground. I just thought that would have been the game plan but when Paddy just stood in front of Justin I knew it was gonna be a rough night for him.

Brock Lesnar was an all American wrestler as well but still got submitted in an ankle lock by Frank Mir bc he was also a submission specialist. It’s only one example but goes to show even traditional all American wrestles can surcumb to submissions. Btw imo Brock Lesbar never belonged in MMA but he did have a short run.

Yeah I’m with em. That’s what I thought they were gonna do. In round one he should have adjusted after almost getting KO by standing in front of Justin.

Paddy said Justin hit him in the solar plexus 1st round that's what almost dropped him, he said he was fucked for the rest of the fight.... Justin didn't even know he punched Paddy in the gut....lol

Was it a kick or a punch? Paddy was a lot slower than usual the entire fight. Maybe that was the shot that did it?

Possibly!! I've been trying to see if I could see it on a replay somewhere.
He told Rogan in the post fight interview about the shot to the gut that pretty much ended his night.

Well that makes a lot of sense to why he was slower than usual.

I like his erragance in the fight world. I like some of the humble fighters too but he is exciting to watch. Also no need to discredit him bc he did survive 5 rounds with Justin. Even if Justing is 38 he still bangs. Much respect for both of them.

He tried to take Justin down a couple times. Not easy facing a D1 all american wrestler though.

It looked like a really fast right hand uppercut that landed in a quick chaotic exchange at about the 3:30 mark. Paddy immediately had to retreat and you could see his body and facial expression change. Gaethje pressed him hit him a couple more times and dropped him.

Punch, it was really fast and hard to see during a chaotic exchange. He tried to hide it but you could tell he got hurt, body posture and facial expressed changed.

After he said that in the post fight ring interview I had to rewind it and see where it happened. He did a good job of hiding it, but after you realize he got hurt you can see it rewatching.

I seen those but they were weak all but his first shot which started as a double leg and Justin defended it well and got out of it against the cage.
Even Justin with his wrestling background Paddy would have had a better chance of defeating Justin on the ground than to stand in front of him imo.

It was a punch then aye. Another reason Paddy should have continued to try to get Justin in the ground imo.

Triple post edit…Dana White expected the same thing for Paddy to go to the ground for submission since he was getting beat up on his feet.

Justin using his wrestling constantly with his take down defense & is extremely high level with it.

It’s hard to single, double, or ankle-pick Justin. Pimblett is good in scrambles and has solid top pressure and passing, but Gaethje is insanely strong in reversals, framing, and avoiding getting snapped down or tied up.

The hardest scrambles I deal with are against legit collegiate wrestlers, and we’ve got a few absolute badasses like that in my gym.

Soooooo I finally watched the whole fight. I’m not sure where everyone gets that it was so hugely one sided. Yes Justin got the more convincing shots in especially on the ground but Paddy came super close quite a few times to ending it. I didn’t catch the punch totals but I suspect Paddy had more strikes landed than Justin. He was way busier.

As far as wrestling goes I know everyone loves their wrestlers. I do to however not everyone is great at it. Justin prefers to stand for a reason. Paddy is way bigger and way stronger on the ground. His scrambling is very very good. I told you all earlier you can’t fix stupid. Paddy should have and could have dominated that fight imo but unfortunately his low fight Iq and ego got the better of him.

Those guys had to fight tournament style..... win 1 fight, wait 2 hrs then fight again!
Yeah, it was brutal. I remember watching guys taking knees to the head while on the ground thinking "this is legal?"

Guys would fight 4 or 5 times in one night. Downright nuts...

I think Justin out struck Paddy every round except R3 but it was really close if I remember correctly from watching it live. Justin was definitely in trouble a couple of times too. One judge gave paddy two rounds

I think it just looked one sided from the damage Justin inflicted vs what he took.

He looked a little out of shape and his movement wasn't as sharp as his last few fights to me. I thought maybe that's why he was trying to make it a brawl early. Idk, maybe just age catching up to him. Seemed he got a little more technical as the fight moved on and he knew he outclassed Paddy on the feet. Coach probably told him to settle tf down lol

What do you think about the title unification fight with Topuria?
