Is our military overrated?

As I watch this Iran situation continue to unfold, I’m beginning to question some things.

I’m not so sure that our military is as good as it used to be. I believe at one time it was superior to most all countries but not anymore. I think many countries have caught up to us in regards to capabilities.

Maybe I’m wrong on this but something seems very odd in the way this military conflict is being handled.

I’m sure there is far more going on behind the scenes that most people realize.

Regardless, something seems way off.

Is it just me? What are your thoughts?

Let me tell you as a veteran, multiple tours overseas, my prior Top Secret clearance. Our military owns the entire world buddy. I can’t go into detail, but you have no clue what our military has. Our Navy just alone, not the amount of ships, what we have and ships can do, can take the entire world in matter of hours. The 2nd most powerful country is Russia. No matter what you hear on the news, with the Ukraine garbage. If this was Putin war, he could sit in North Sea and use 1 submarine ballistic missle system, do flatten Ukraine in 15 minutes. Never believe the news it’s all lies. In 2009 I was part of a massive horrific incident, never made the news, that shows the news is only showing what they are told, not the truth. I wish I could say, but I would go to Leavenworth if I did say anything. Remember , we own NATO.

There is always conflict year round and forever. Not what my opinion is. Let me explain one thing like I told you, news only tells you what they are allowed to tell you or what we tell them to tell you. We have been in some type of war forever. Only people that know what is going on, are the people serving in the GULF, and I’m sure they are having a blast. Knowing that they aren’t running bullshit drills all day, they are actually loading real missles, fueling jets for a reason, and I won’t get into submarines, or government will be knocking at my door. If your question is, should we be involved what’s going on, the only person that can give you honest answer, is someone in live action now. And I’m sure they will say yes. But good news you can have your opinion if you want!

Prior army and 12 years in defense, the military as a mechanism isn't the problem here. We aren't "fighting" Iran, we're just putting pressure around them to try and force a resolution. A full blown ground invasion would be a shit show and we apparently aren't willing to threaten them with the serious tools in the kit. So we're stuck with tbis nonsense currently going on. We've got the technology and firepower but most people I talk to around where I live think Iran is another Iraq/Afghanistan and they really aren't, they're much better equipped.

Considering the US spends $1 Trillion on defense annually which makes up over 1/3 of the World's total defense spending and according to the Pentagon are running low on weapon stockpiles in Iran is comical.

The Military Industrial Complex is beyond wasteful charging $500 for $3 parts.

Just look at the results of our involvement in the Middle East over the last 25 years and I think you have your answers.

For the record, I love and respect the f out of our soldiers and vets but despise the Government putting them needlessly in harm's way for bullshit conflicts.

I think it’s definitely overrated. It’s not the superpower it once was, that’s for sure. Loss of an industrial base, over-inflated bureaucracy, and poor training have really weakened our fighting forces’ abilities to be agile and to adapt to a changing battlefield. We lost Iraq and Afghanistan because it was unconventional and our military is specifically leveraged to fight conventional wars.

As far as Iran goes, it’s unwinnable. The boots on the ground don’t want to be there. Sure, they’re excited to make some deployment money and get a deployment patch, but they aren’t motivated for the mission set. They don’t want to go murder kids for oil.

As far as what moussa said about having the ability to just blow them off the map. That may or not be true, but that would also be a loss. Why are we going to war with Iran? We want their oil and the infrastructure and manpower that is currently extracting it. Blowing up the entire country would just leave a giant useless crater that would take decades to redevelop. Thats called not meeting mission objectives. That’s still a lost war at the end of the day.

I don’t think we could take Iran conventionally with an unmotivated force fighting against a fairly advanced force on their home turf that would fight us back unconventionally. We just couldn’t adapt fast enough.

Political will and public opinion drive what the military CAN do. Our Soldiers are innovative and our strength lies in our adaptability. Large changes take time, but Soldiers will find a way to win if given the opportunity.

It’s up to political leadership to provide a clear picture of what “winning” is.

It's a 'we could crush them' easily. But, if we are supposed to be the good guys, why would we? Most of the West and developed countries have the ability to turn other less developed and or war ready countries into land bacteria couldn't survive on.

If it's a man to man type war then it's a far more level playing field

Our military owns the world. What “holds us back” is the leash the government has on us. Things like ROE and the Geneva convention are what hold us back.

If our military was dropped into a war zone with no leash and was told “just do what you have to do, you’ve got a week” we would wipe the floor with every standing army on this planet.

But we can’t fight that way. A school gets blown up and people are protesting on the streets crying about it. War is war. Hell is hell. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell.

In Iraq you’d have little kids with S vests on. Men using kids and women as human shields. They didn’t fight by the rules but we were expected to fight a different way. It’s hard to fight a war on a leash.

TLDR: if our military was off leash, we’d annihilate everyone.
