Get back on the horse man! I totally get it though. Hope the new pup is a great new family member for you.

We went about 5 years without a dog a few decades back, as the loss was too hard to get back over. Once we got another, we decided to always have at least two, a few years apart in age. Kind of bridges the heartache with a loss to have one or two still around the house. That said, we’re now wondering whether to get a second, as it will likely take us into our 70’s (depressing fucking thought), and we’re not sure how much dog to get (we always have had big dogs, mostly labs, but smaller - like a 40 pounder - is starting to make sense). With the current guy only 2, we have some time and can just foster others for now, but it’s hard to imagine being around the house without at least one.

Good luck! Getting him from the states or locally, and same breed (IG?)? Sorry if I missed that in a post above.

Rat/JR terrier cross. We had a JR that went to 20 years. At last we know what we are getting ourselves into.
Talk about a dog that is cute, bought on impulse and ending up in rescue.
I seem to remember that during the popularity of “Fraiser”, this was happening big time. A Jack Russell is absolutely an advanced owner dog. They can be too much, too quick for average or new dog owners. Definitely not a Lab or Golden.

You have to have your shit squared away to be a good JR owner, for sure! Sad how many end up in rescues. Same with Pitty’s. Great dogs when they have the right owner, but they fill shelters when people don’t know how to handle them (or buy on a whim and then move to an apartment that doesn’t allow them, etc.). One shelter we volunteered at a lot in the past was prolly 60% pit bulls (a couple hundred at any given time). Same thing happens with JRs, Pyr’s etc - dogs that require, as you say, an advanced owner.

Seems whether it’s PEDs or pups, some people don’t do their due diligence before hopping on/in, and things can go sideways. It’s one thing when it’s your own body, but I have a real problem with people that fuck up a dog’s life because of it. I mean, we domesticated them, ffs, and then mistreat them? Humans can really suck…

Don't mean to stick my nose in yalls conversation but that part really burns my ass. 🤬 My pit was one of the best dogs I've ever had.

The wolf hybrid dogs are another breed that gets put into rescue a lot, I think they are a beautiful breed ,but you better know what you’re getting into. I knew someone who had one, such an interesting breed. I thought about one but never did because of the different things that went along with owning one. This dog was pure white and that wolf face, beautiful.

Right, like feeding them kibble all the time, usually the cheapest one and never looking into what a dog should be eating. Or proper health care like regular check ups and dental.

My friend used to make fun of me because we spent hours every month grinding up chickens and vegetables the portioning out a whole piece like a neck, wing or leg with the properly weighed out amount for each dog. Our freezer was packed with raw food for our dogs.
I asked if he would feed his child Little Debbies and Sunny D only for her entire life. He then understood…sort of.

Talk about raw feeding and everyone thinks you are some sort of new age hippie. But dogs were never meant to eat kibble. Look up the history of it.
It’s just a lazy man’s method.

Border Collie cross 16 years.
Italian Greyhound 16 years.
Italian Greyhound 19 years.
Jack Russell 20 years.
Most of that on raw food with minimal health issues.
Watch a dog eating raw chicken,beef or pork and see how much they look really into their primal self.
Our new dog will get the same after we have him a few months.

Here's another picture of my old pit bull (that I previously posted on the 1st page) with her buddy Monty the Shar Pei. Of all the pairs of dogs that we've had these two got along the best. Both were rescues. The Shar Pei was about 80% blind due to an untreated long standing entropion condition that he had long before the rescue got him so there wasn't much that could be done at that point. He learned to adapt so well that guests would be surprised when we would tell them that he was basically blind.

I got a chihuahua from a guy at work once that was a year old. He wouldn’t come when I called him, took zero cues, you name it.
I asked Jose (duh) what’s up with this dog. He laughed and said my wife only speaks Spanish to them.

I learned more Spanish than that dog did English.

If you remember the street dogs I rescued from in front of the gym a couple of years ago, Thelma and Luis, they only listened when I spoke to them in Spanish.

We will be training all of our future dogs in Afrikaans, especially the Boer Boels.

Told my kid the other day that the dog is smarter than she is because the dog knows about 30-40 English words but she didnt know one single bark. 🤣🤣
 
Her ears didn’t stay folded over for very long. I’ve had a couple Jack Russells over my lifetime, love the breed. Last one lived 19 years…. Got this one for my daughter so she could have “her very own best friend” …. I told her she takes her with her when she moves out but I’m kinda hoping she doesn’t lol…

This dog is so cute in person. Her personality and the way she prances around.

This passed summer she kept going after bees and got stung on her lips a few times…. I couldn’t find any pics but I’m sure my wife or daughter have them… her lips swelled up and although I felt bad for her she looked cartoonish it was pretty hilarious.

I cannot believe how patient my German shepherd/husky mix has been with her…. Serves him right because he was the pup with our last Jack Russell and he was merciless when he was playing around with her old ass.
