I used to get so paranoid because where I live I have to go to the local dump and I was throwing my pins in a laundry detergent bottle and throwing them in the recyclables.... I told my Dr and he laughed at me, told me to use my protein jugs and fill them... tape em up and write Biohazard/Sharps and I can throw them in the regular trash.
BUT it vary's from state to state.

As the only real bio hazard from used needles is if they stick someone. For decades I have just put the needles i an container that i can seal and throw it in the trash. If someone wants to open the container and stick their hand in that is on them. Otherwise it just goes in the landfill or an incinerator.
