Hey guys. I've been having some pain in my shoulder and its making me nervous. Its not preventing me from working out too bad. Its just towards the end of my workout and during triceps pulldowns. I was reading that a rotator cuff tear would cause strength and motion loss. Nothing seems to be really affected other than a throbbing pain. Like just sitting around the house and ocasionly when i move my arm a certain way. It just seems to be hurting and aching more than it should from a workout. I was in a car accident a month ago and really didn't notice it afterwards and have been worked out a few times since but maybe I wasnt paying attention cuz i was sore all over. Should i keep working out with just lighter weight and be careful or should I just lay off upper body workouts for a few weeks?

Hard to say what to do because we don't know what's wrong. I tore my supraspinatus a few months ago and that fucker stopped working. Hardly any pain until that night. But every injury is different.

What part of your shoulder hurts? Can you pinpoint the pain with your finger and manual pressure?

It's right around the top of my shoulder like at the joint more towards the front. Its more of like and aching pain than a sharp pain but its been pretty consistent for a week now. I dont notice anything crazy when i put pressure on it but my shoulders are pretty sore right now so it's hard to tell. I did chest and shoulders last night and i didn't notice any crazy pain. Only really seemed to bother me during triceps pulldowns because my shoulder is moving around quite a bit. Whenever I move my arm around and even when im sitting down typing on my phone I can feel it aching like almost burning.

I have had my share of shoulder problems as most of us have over the decades of training(over training)...Dodged all the big injuries,,,luck or common sense,,,couldn't say....General rule,,,,If ice along with a short break, doesn't seem to help...it's a good idea to have it checked...Shoulder injuries will side line you for some time....I have found that most ,,,stress the shoulder due to over training ...Let me explain,Chest on Monday,,,Shoulders on Tuesday...Or simply, not allowing enough re-covery time...perhaps,looking at your schedule will shed light,,,just a thought...In ay event,,,always listen to what your body is telling you...Good Luck

Hmm. A lot of possibilities, but could be bursitis or something wrong with your supraspinatus. There's also the biceps tendon that runs pretty high up there.

Is there any weird feeling/grinding when you press on the bone where the clavicle and the acromion join? That's the AC joint, I separated mine before and it hurt kind of like that. Could also be an impingement. It's really hard to say without an MRI honestly

Truthfully you will need an exam and possible advanced imaging such as an MRI to make the diagnosis. I am generally pretty confident with my diagnosis after I conduct a thorough shoulder exam, generally resulting in conservative therapy and possibly an injection if I suspect subacromial/subdeltoid bursitis. If the patient fails to respond to that I will get an MRI.

This is the best advice!

I agree with getting it checked out by the doctor and getting an mri. I recently found out thru mri that i have a large tear in my rotator cuff. My point is that i was having problems for the past couple years and possibly could have avoided the large tear if i would have dealt with it sooner rather than wishing it would get better. Its a pain in the butt with the medical system these days but thats a rant better saved for a later day! Keep us posted on your progress

I agree here... conservative approach first. Use an ice pack and rest. Work around the injury as much as possible.

It should respond if it isn't serious. Doesn't improve/stays the same or gets worse, have an MRI done to determine what if any structural damage is present.

Now if you don't want to waste time, get the MRI done ASAP. Maybe have a cortisone injection to get the inflammation under control.

And don't sleep on your shoulders.

I'm in the same boat, problems with both shoulders. About ready to see an Orthopedic.

My shoulders have always been good...sore when I go heavier these days but I am 48.

For me, even when I was in my 20's I stretched and warmed up (thank my Army days during PT for that). Those good habits stayed with me.

Seen many many young dudes just walk into the gym and start benching heavy. No preparation at all. Bc they are young, they get away with it...thinking they will be talking about shoulder injuries one day too.

The three exercices and two stretches described in this out of print book that was written by a physician have helped me out tremendously over the past 20 years.....

I perform the two stretches daily, and 2 of the 3 exercises 3 times per week, and my shoulders remain pain-free, (unlike they used to be)........

A couple years ago my left shoulder was killing me. Any shoulder or chest workout was non existent for at least a month.

I was in some of the best shape of my life and didn’t want a doc to tell me I had a torn rotator. Finally the pain got to where any upper body work was almost impossible.

Saw a chiropractor and he was very confident I had a torn rotator. Got the MRI and FML it was a cyst that developed from prolonged bursitis/tendinitis. He did an microwaves and ultrasound treatment on it and I left there and did bench press for the first time in a couple months.

3 total treatments and I was pain free.
