Retirement and life after career

This is an interesting thread. I I have been an educator for 30 years. I made a decision to invest in my education y taking out student loans to get my Master’s and Doctoral degrees. The hope was that it would payoff with some opportunities that were presenting themselves at the time. Shortly after Covid hit and those opportunities dried up. Stupidest thing I ever did was taking out those loans to get those degrees. It wasn’t a wise investment, but education was what I knew and it seems like the right thing to do at the time. I was a single dad at the time and couldn’t afford to go to school any other way. Now with basically the restructuring of the DOE, the government has decided to eliminate the contracted repayment agreement I signed and force me into a repayment plan that more than doubled my loan payment. It’s more than my mortgage now. I don’t know what we will do to get by, but I will find a way to make it work. It will force a definite change in our lifestyle. I do t consider myself much of an entrepreneur, but I am looking at ways to use the internet and social media to create an income source. I’m really thinking of starting up some lifestyle training. I’m particular, helping folks who are morbidly obese take their lives back through better nutrition and basic training. I be lived that story and I know I would be relatable to those who are trying to figure it out. I’m just going to have to figure out the blueprint. I don’t know if I will be able to afford retiring. But I’d love to build that business and retire from education and make something else that I truly have a passion for create the income flow I need and help others at the same time. I can’t think of anything that would be more rewarding. I like hearing your stories. Good luck to all of you.

Contact GeenPath. They helped me. Same thing happened during COVID. Rates went up and up. My daughter went bust and I contacted them. Massive decrease in payment at a fixed rate. I cut 8-10% interest off her loans.

Sorry it was MEFA REFI. They did her student loans. GreenPath deals with refinancing other loans. They are also good and I and others i know have had success with both.

I need to pay attention to this thread big time. I definitely need some guidance.

So I officially retired in 2019 but I fought UG up until last year. So I’ve basically been training for fights for 2 decades straight. That was my whole existence. Now that is over I’m really struggling to find a purpose in life. I have no clue wtf to do. I pretty much suck at everything and enjoy nothing else. Hopefully I get some good ideas from all you old heads that found your way.

I almost ran for city council a few years ago.

You are still young enough to grab a civil service job... Obviously I don't know you, but at 36 you are still young enough to get into a fire department or something like that?
where you been? you alright?

Back when I started working in early high school, the government would send Social Security forms every year saying that by the time I am old enough to retire, Social Security will be tapped out.

I don’t know if that was a political thing or what, because that stopped after a few years, but ever since then I figured retirement wasn’t really an option, lol…

Coaching?
I’ve done it here and there over the years. Only thing holding me back is location. I literally live in the middle of nowhere. Neighbors are miles away around here and the biggest town probably the size of a couple blocks in the city. That’s Pittsburgh and it’s 1.5hrs away. I did ok in the city awhile back but the rent there is off the charts now.

Definitely something I’m looking into. Regardless I have to do something soon because I’m seriously loosing my man mojo.

With a whole universe of choices as to what to do, learn or be involved in, i never really understand the concept of getting bored. Can't think of the last time i was. Maybe it is from what my mommy always told me when i said i was bored. She would tell me only boring people get bored! No one has ever said i was boring.... A hole maybe but not boring!

I think boredom is a mild form of depression. People have things they can do, but don’t feel motivated to do them. That said, I don’t get bored unless I am waiting at the DMV or some shit…

I just look at the crowd around me and that keeps me entertained.
I was at the DMV this week. There was a woman at the door staring at it. She asked me if she should just go in. All i could do not to laugh. I told he yes and to get a number. She had to be in her 40's so she must have done this before. People just crack me up.
As for the depression i can agree with that. But the only real way i have found to get past that was to go do something positive. Meds can help but without the action there is no real change in my experience.

I agree, people watching can be entertaining — though you have to be careful not to creep them out!

I don't stare but how people choose to take things is on them. I scan back and forth and keep and track of everything that goes on around me. Seems a lot of society is about saying and doing things the way the other person wants it. I don't do that. Where i live i make eye contact with people as i walk by and people aren't used to it and how they react is funny. It is almost like i visually molested them. No one looks at each other in public they look away or down at the ground. I have walked down the streets in places like Chicago and make eye contact, say hello and just walk by. Different parts of the country have different acceptable standards i find.

Yeah, cities are weird like that. I live in the country and here everyone says hi whether they know each other or not. My theory is that when there are so few people around, it is more awkward not to acknowledge each other…

What are your plans? If you have already retired please comment on the process and your thoughts after starting and some time into it. I'll be 65 this year. I'm probably a couple years out. I have run some numbers. Although my total income will drop, based on different tax structure and policies, My net income will probably be much closer than what it looks like. What have you guys found?
Sorry. I'm late to the party but I've had the opportunity to read the responses you received and I found them to be fascinating. I'm 60 years old. Retired from my.job 10 years ago. It came with a decent pension. Along the way I've continued to work in the private sector and local government (finance and audit). In addition. I've had some crazy surgeries that have altered my fitness activities.
That being said, my wife and I will stay in the game for another 4-5 years (max). I'm continuing to monitor our debt progress . But honestly, the job pays the bills, good benefits but most of all it does provide excellent motivation and keeps my mind working. Staying home and not using my mind is really terrifying to me. I need to keep the brain busy. I asked the wife if I could start a German Shepherd rescue...she said no....back to crunching numbers!

Or……People just suck in general so the more people there are around the more assholes you find.

That is funny though. I’m in the sticks. The other day I drove past my neighbors house ( 2 miles away from mine) and I didn’t see him out. The next day I saw him in person and the first words out of his mouth was “hey I waved to you yesterday and you didn’t wave back. Everything ok?” Lol I was like sorry bud I didn’t see ya. Sheeesh. Lol

3 years ago my 78 year old godfather and one of our visits as we do every 4-5 years. He's the last of my Mom's generation and is in great shape, looks 10 years younger, still works, and has a great attitude. He told me to quite f'king around and get in shape... time is running out, with my military background and gym habits you know what discipline is.... get some! He said it firmly, with love and intent.

At age 60, off went 50 lbs, no longer pre-diabetic, got down under 10% BF, doing all the things we do here. No just learning the AAS part. What's the point, posting in this thread? I don't plan on retiring, just getting better at work, caring for my customers, staying relevant, and enjoying perfecting my routine right up until the day Lord takes me home.

That last bit was pretty fucking awesome. I don’t think it can be said any better.

I hope you don’t mind Sir but I’m gonna steal that last line for myself too. That’s the best outlook on aging gracefully that I I’ve heard.

Thank You!

Full transparency: I “retired” when I was 33 with $500k. Im 42 now with $1.2m. It’s more like an experiment in sustainable minimalism tbh. We don’t have kids and live comfortably in a 900sqft guesthouse behind one of my three duplex properties. I self manage my rentals and once every couple years I’ll acquire another one, remodel it, then refinance it to get some equity back out. I probably work an average of 4hrs per week. My interests for the most part are very affordable. Outdoor recreation, gym, volunteering as a big brother and traveling the west in my campervan. My wife works remotely and makes a decent enough salary that we can qualify for conventional property loans. Plus, we get some really nice tax benefits since I don’t have a w2 and qualify as a real estate professional.

I have no idea how someone with a full time job could truly live this lifestyle. It’s a fucking full time job meal prepping, pinning gear and peptides, cardio, lifting, stretching etc.

Somehow at a young age I decided to engineer the life I wanted for myself. I had a parent die early and it really put in perspective for me the value of my time. WTF good is a 401k if you don’t live long enough to see it?
