I started a cut a month and a day ago after a long and somewhat irresponsible bulk. Decided id clean up my diet and do a serious cut after failing in the past after not knowing much about how to correctly diet. I started at 23% BF at 240 lbs. Checked my inbody results a couple days ago and it said im down to 17% BF and 228 lbs and my lean muscle somehow went up but im in a deficit? Im curious if the Inbody is as accurate as it says it is? Ive worked my ass off the past month to lose weight and im happy with the results thus far but im worried the results arent accurate.

Those electrical impedance things aren't accurate. Try using it first thing in the morning and then last thing at night and see how big a difference just being hydrated makes.

Makes sense. I had just finished a workout when i decided to go check my stats. So i was probably dehydrated.

100%. When I was an undergrad one of my profs did a paper on this. It's an accurate measure of hydration, not of bodyfat. Mine always registers about 5% higher than my dexa scan says.

None of the ways to measure bf are accurate.
The only way to get an accurate reading is to boil yourself until you’re goop and bone and get someone to scoop the fat out the and weigh it.

Don’t worry about a certain number.
Body composition is all that matters.

You don't think dexa scans are pretty accurate? Bodpods, etc?

Or what about a 198 point caliper test?

There’s too many variables and no none of it is 100% accurate. You can get different readings on the same day
People waste far too much time and energy worrying about some number. All that matters is body composition.
If I look extremely lean it doesn’t matter if a bod pod or dexa says I’m 1% or 15%.
If somebody asked me I’d just say you’re as fat as your fattest body part.

Yup.

The scans are fun to get done to see what you're at possibly but, there is a good bit of deviation in them. Ronnie said he measured 1% on the Joe Rogan podcast which is impossible but, given his lean body mass it gave that result.

I think tracking bodyfat is pretty useless overall. Tracking measurements in certain spots with calipers is very useful though. Just like update pics and progression in the gym, just another tool to use when you're trying to progress in whatever way.

I don’t know how accurate those things are . But I can tell you sure you can build muscle in a deficit. Especially if you are on gear .

I absolutely agree up until you get pretty damn lean if you do it right.
Justin Harris actually talked about this on a podcast. I can’t remember his exact words but I believe it was keeping protein high and using androgens. He explained how androgens and high proteins can build muscle in a deficit.

I think dexa scans are accurate. Most others are ok but there will be troubles at the extremes like with Ronnie. They weren't really designed to measure people who are hyper lean or hyper obese. When I was an undergrad the dexa was still new so we were doing the underwater weigh test. At the time that was considered the gold standard. We worked up a very muscular NHL hockey player who came out as a negative body fat. He was so lean and muscular that the test just wasn't going to give us an accurate reading on him.

No they’re objectively not 100% accurate and you can get different readings on the same day.

Well nothing is 100% accurate, of course. It looks like DEXA is as accurate as the previous gold standard, hydrostatic weighing that I mentioned above.

That's his point.

They're fun to play with but, don't get hung up on the results.

Knowing your body fat is rather useless info really.

See thats the thing im natty right now.

[what you mean Natty right now ? Like off cycle or Never used any of it before . I think you should focus more on training and eating right now tbh . After that maybe gear . Gear should not make or break you . You should be great without it .

I’m trying to find the podcast he was on. It wasn’t recent and he’s been on quite a few.
If I find it I’ll post it
