I'm trying to decide whether taking an anti-inflammatory will impact muscle growth negatively. I have heard that soreness is important for muscle growth and ibuprofen can hinder it. Problem is soreness also interrupts my sleep. What do you think?

I always heard it’s no good for growth. Think about tooth pain. When u take it it decreases the inflammation… essential inflammation in the gym would be the pump and blood to a muscle decreasing that would not completely hinder muscle growth BUT it would definitely decrease growth….This is simply my take on it I could totally be wrong . That’s just how I’ve looked at it

You’re gonna hear arguments from both sides on this. One study says it does affect muscle growth and the next says it doesn’t. Personally I absolutely do think Ibuprofen negatively affects muscle growth. I’m just basing that on my personal experience with it. I have no medical data to back that up.

The body need sto sense inflammation to start prostaglandin production and healing. As long as you don't disrupt that pathway to much then it may not be a problem with growth. The damage the anti inflammatories do to the stomach and internal organs is what i wanted to avoid. Last i read 50.000 end up in the emergency room every year from tylenol OD and hundreds end up with kidney failure. I have seen studies that show anti inflammatories don't inferior wit old guys muscle growth. Seems they have enough body inflammation that they don't have to worry. Asked a Dr. about if they would slow my healing after a shoulder surgery i had and he just laughed and said i would have enough inflammation that prostaglandins would be produced no matter how many anti inflammatories i took.

Ibuprofen is bad for the liver, which is bad for your natural hgh levels, which is bad for gains.
Use magnesium glycinate 600mgs 2 hours before bed with a liter of water.

One liter of water before bed and I won't sleep because I'll be pissing all night.

On the topic, if you have so much pain that you can't sleep, then you should treat the cause of that pain, you can't take ibuprofen every day and expect that it's a good idea, regardless of whether it helps you grow or not. Taking ibuprofen or paracetamol once in a while, when you have unusual pain, then it's okay.

Agree with the others here - inability to sleep will hinder progress worse than taking NSAIDs.
Another option is a topical anti inflammatory - look into diclofenac gel. Not as likley to go systemic.
Brand name is Voltaren.
If needed and If given the choice between prescription NSAIDs, Diclofenac sodium has a far shorter half-life than something like meloxicam.

I take Diclofenac Na 2x daily as pill. If it does negatively effect muscle growth it is no small it is undetectable. The inflammation debate would mean any anti-inflammatory substance would hurt growth. Turmeric, blueberries, salmon, tree nuts healthy foods that reduce inflammation would decrease gains and that is not the case. Pump is not inflammation. Inflammation is fluid build up, your body uses as a defense mechanism, but it causes other issues that are negative. It's not blood like pump in your muscles, it's a flood of fluids and white blood cells to an area. In college we used to take 800 mg ibuprofen after morning practice, ice and NA bath, and hot shower, so we could get through 2 a days and reduce inflammation in joints. Now ice baths which will reduce pump and blood/nutrient flow to muscle can inhibit growth. But think about it cold closes capillaries so pump disappears. Ibuprofen does not effect the vaso dilation required for growth, just like turmeric, blueberries ect don't reduce vaso dilation. High levels maximal over the counter doses over extended time can reduce protein synthesis. 1200mg a day to effect you. 400mg a day had no effect on protein synthesis.

We take PED, tadilafil, sadilafil, juice, all that increase protein synthesis in muscles. It would be fair to say the maximal dose nsaids to effect muscle growth is significantly higher then the tested groups. Bad joints or headache 400-600mg ibuprofen won't stop gains. The pump is blood and fresh nutrients to muscle to repair and keep muscles safe. Huge doses of nsaids are required to stop that without the PEDs.

When I first heard about this I did some searching and found a study saying ibuprofen does have a negative effect on muscle growth versus people taking aspirin. However sometimes I really need that ibuprofen so these days I take 1 instead of 3 or 4 at a time.

Also, was advised by a more experienced lifter to use the advil liquid gels cuz he believes they are more gentle on the liver.
