Any ideas what I did to my finger?

So two nights ago I fell asleep on couch by accident. Woke up fine. Got my daughter ready said bye to my wife and as I went to go open my door I felt a really bad pain in my index finger. Looked down and my knuckle was completely swollen almost double in size. Since then it is still bothering me.

Doesn't hurt if it's still or if I touch it with my other hand. Only really hurts when I bend it. Mostly where the knuckle is and between my knuckle and nail bed. It's very difficult to make a fist I have to fight through the pain but once I do I can fully make a fist and hold it there without pain.

Any idea what happened?

What @Cypher said. We cant possibly know. Could be gout flare up, early infection, a sprain or jam, joint or tendon inflammation, the list goes on. Try icing it 15 mins 3 or 4 times tomorrow if it doesnt help go to the doctor

Thanks yea seems like all those mostly involve the same treatment. Dr just gonna do an X-ray and give me a splint which seems like I can just do that at home and save money

Medic here. I can't really say much without doing a physical assessment. I'm assuming you didn't physically harm your knuckle to cause the inflammation. Hard to rule out anything. I doubt it's broken, but the only way to confirm is x-ray. If you want to roll the dice and try to let it heal without attention, my recommendation is to monitor the swelling. If it it grows or pain becomes greater, it's time to see a professional.

If it’s an infection be careful, I had a friend that ignored a cut on his hand, he was a heavy equipment mechanic, and by the time he finally did something about it, it was to late, about killed him because it got into his blood so much. You want to save money ? Get it looked at now.

Do you have any swelling and/or redness around the nail bed or around the corner of your cuticle? Have you recently pulled a hang nail or piece of skin off your cuticle?

Looks a lot less swollen to me today but range of motion seems worse. Can't really bend it at all.

Youre the one bitching twice now. I had a random swollen finger that came out of the blue. Curious why it happened and don't want to go to a DR because all they will do is take a scan and splint. Was curious if anyone knew what was going on. Still managed to finger fuck your old hag last night.
