Becoming the Iron Lion

Haven't trained a lot. Just enough to not suck yet.

Push today, went well. Lack of training lately has helped with some fatigue but, it's just a matter of time until I start going backwards. The bright side, when I do train the pumps are crazy.

Was 252 this morning.

Looking solid!
Ty sir.

Just hanging on by my finger nails over here lol.

I haven't had that crazy urge to train in weeks so it's been a struggle. I'm usually up and after it as soon as my eyes pop open but, hasn't been that way for a while now.

Dunno what the deal is but, just gotta keep showing up until it's back.

It'll come back. Sometimes you need the time away to crave it again.

Trained pull y'day, was a really good session.

I pulled the log book out so I'm not just guessing at weights from the previous session. I knew where everything was dialed in at the old gym and haven't done any logging at the new gym really so, I wrote it all down. I might start tracking everything again, dunno yet but, it was nice to put it all on paper line I have the past 6 years.

.I don't have my book in front of me but it was something like -

Xplode pull-down - 4pps*10, 8, 3x12

Arsenal multi grip row bottom grip - 4pps*12, 10, 3*11

Same machine neutral grip - 3*12, 10

Arsenal pullover -160*13, 11, 10
Sa
Dante Row - 150*12, 11, 11

Arsenal t bar- 2*12, 12, 10

Biceps mixed in and some rear delt at the end.

Doesn't look like much but the brain was on kill so the sets were rough.

This will be one of my pull days, might adjust a little.

My other pull day will be arsenal pull-down, Xplode low row, arsenal mid row and lifestyle machine row for upper back. Just gonna feel them out.

I'll train legs for the first time at the new gym tomorrow. I haven't hit legs there yet because there's not much in heavy compound options there that aren't a squat pattern yet. The squat patterns crush my knees so I've been mostly avoiding them and only using them as a accessory. Leg press, hip press, squat press have been the majority of the working exercises.

They've got an arsenal pendulum, leg press, hack and v squat. Life fitness Lying leg curl, seated curl, extension, adductor and abductor and a Nautilus glute drive.

I'll play around and try to not cripple myself for the next week but, it'll probably be a heavy focus on accessory work with the squat patterns being late in the session a bit lighter and the leg press doing the heavy lifting with a few different foot positions.

Idk if you’ve tried it but the Arsenal pendulum is very easy on my knees
Will be giving it a whirl for the first time tomorrow.

The adjustable foot plate might just be enough to avoid the debilitating pain. Gonna find out

Legs at the new gym for the first go.

I can absolutely tell I haven't used a squat pattern in a long time lol. Didn't take much and the quads were obliterated.

I did have some knee pain during and after the session but, it wasn't completely debilitating so, if I'm mostly fine tomorrow that's a win.

Adductor machine - well, I like the giant thigh pads on this piece and it's crazy smooth but, used the full stack for 15+ reps on all 4 working sets with paused reps. Also, on the inside of the foot stirrups there's rubber bumper pads that hit right before I get a full contraction so I don't get the bigger squeeze I like. Not bad, but could be better.

Extension - meh, not bad, not great, only worked up to 120 for 4 sets of 15 with a hard squeeze 2 count. The extension at the other gym (techno gym brand) is the best extension I've ever felt so, I'm just a bit spoiled I think. I'll tinker with this some more next time. Very smooth, just not quite enough rom.

Arsenal Pendulum - foot plate on the second to bottom notch, heels about 3 inches from the button and just outside of shoulder width, only went to 3 plates for a set of 8 and the knees were not happy. I adjusted my feet closer together and about an inch higher for 2 sets with 2 plates for 12 and this felt much better. I think this might be ok to progress because it was definitely hitting the quads and I can still tweak the foot plate and where I'm setting up a bunch.

Arsenal V squat - I know a lot of people love these machines but, I've never been a huge fan. I guess people love them because you can put 30 plates on the thing and do it backwards. I choose to put 2 plates a side on it, use it backwards but I was only targeting the quads, didn't let the hips move any extra bit. Feet were wider like where I started the pendulum and, on this, it felt pretty good. 3 sets of 15. I'll plan on using this turned the correct way for my other leg day since I've got very limited options.

Arsenal leg press - smoothest press I've ever used but good Lord this bitch is huge. Don't get that kinda scrunched up feeling like most leg presses so it messed with my head a little. This one has the little raised piece at the very bottom center of the foot plate so, I used that to elevate the heels with my feet almost touching. Only 2 plates a side for 3 sets of 20.

Note - I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention this second queb I'm going to explain, when you're doing a leg press, and the goal is trying to target the quad sweep, simply putting your feet low and close isn't enough.

2 things you can think about, first method, with a foot placement inside shoulder (they don't have to be SUPER close but closer then usual) on the eccentric, make a conscious effort to have the knees travel away from each other to the side and then press the knees back together for the concentric. Don't press the feet up, push the knees together. (Do this carefully so you don't bust a knee cap)

The second, which is what I did today, with the feet almost touching, maybe 2 inches apart and low, press the knees together all the way down AND all the way up. This is the ticket.

The first que will allow a much deeper stretch and bring some adductors into the mix and maybe a bit of glute so it's a better "prime mover" but the second is a quad crusher.

That was it for today. Didn't touch hamstrings since I'll get to those next time. I'm hoping I'm ok tomorrow so I can try to progress these weights next time since I only went in about half cocked today.

Surprisingly, the knees aren't in much pain today. Just a touch. That's a good sign.

Push today. My wrist is limiting what I can do in this gym. Anything with a neutral handle or any angle to the handle, I can't keep a grip on it. So we're trying to suicide grip everything and that doesn't really get the muscle to contract how I like it to.

The stuff with the normal grip width I can fully grip enough to make things kinda work. These Nautilus clones though, they have giant fat grips, almost impossible unless it's a suicide grip.

Anyways session was this

Xplode flat press -worked up to 2 top sets with 4 plates per side, then a back off with 2 plates so I could fully grip the handles

Xplode neutral grip shoulder press - this is an upper chest movement for me. Seat down, butt forward to the edge. The range here isn't huge but it's perfectly targeted. Worked to 3 plates a side here for 2 sets then a backoff at 2.

Arsenal flat press - nothing special, middle arm adjustment, 3 plates for 3 working sets

Arsenal Viking press - just for fun, 1 plate a side just feeling it out. Won't be a staple

Life fitness flat press - this mfer nice and smooth. Converging is perfect, stack is heavy as fuck. It goes to 295 but I can't unrack it. Working sets were with 100. I assume this is weight per side? I dunno because ain't nobody moving that stack for reps.

Cable fly -3 sets at 66 per side

Life fitness reverse Peck Deck - 1 working sets of 180, 1 high rep rest pause with the same weight

Pull tomorrow!

Pull. Weight was 259 this morning so that's a good thing.

Very solid. Lats are cramping up during my lazy time so it was a success.

Arsenal pull-down - I do these with a pronated grip on this piece instead of neutral. For me, torso and arm length play the key role because the seat isn't adjustable, this grip on this machine hits like, right under the shoulder blade in the mid back/lat to the inside of the teres.... I can't think of anything I've done before this where I felt a lift in that area. It's definitely a keeper

2 sets at 2pps+12, 11, 1*13

Arsenal Mid Row - I love machines with d handles, especially after my surgery. I can find the perfect angle to pull without having to be fully pronated or supinated. I'm just a slight bit turned from pronated, chest pad at the middle/bottom of sternum. Crazy stretch and contraction here.

2 sets 4pps*10, 9, moved seat low to hit upper back a touch 3pps*11

Nautilus Xplode low row neutral grip -

4pps*11, 10

Same machine pronated grip - this grip on this machine feels so close to a BB row. With the arm and handle angles, I can focus on pulling the handles apart and it crushes everything. Handles are held where the edge of the handle is facing in.

2pps*12, 9

Life fitness upper back row - adjusted the seat height this time and I think I found the right setup. Besides this being smooth as butter, the handles are so close at the start, and diverge so much, that I can stretch out the entire back and fully contract everything without my arms being too close at the top. It's a squeezy lift but I can still load it pretty well

260*13, 11, 10

Biceps in there as well.

Leggies

Not bad.

Adductors and extension to start as a warm up then into working sets

Arsenal leg press feet low and wide - this is the only leg press I can comfortably do this on because the seat design. These felt great. 4 plates per side for 3 sets of 15. Pause in the hole. Forced reps on the second and third set to hit 15

Arsenal v squat facing forward - foot plate position made a big difference here. The higher angle bothers the knees so, middle or one peg down was perfect. 2 plates a side for 3 sets of 15 same set types as leg press. Crazy stretch through the quad all the way to the hip

V squat lunge facing pad - these were good too. Just gotta make sure the back foot doesn't slip. 1 plate per side for 3 sets of 12

Extension muscle round

Lying leg curl - 1 set to cramps lol. Every time I train hams directly they cramp so I bail when they do

Y'day was push.

I guess I didn't write this session down the last time I went through it. It was decent but I felt rattled because I wasn't thinking when I trained my last push session and did what I remembered NOT doing the time before...... It wasn't ideal whatsoever

Pec Deck 4 working sets

Arsenal incline - this is where I realized I was in dream land. 4 plates a side, only got 4. Backed it off to 3 and got 9 then 8 with a drop set

Standing vertical press - 3 working at 2pps, 12, 11, 10

Cable fly - 4 sets 15, 14 12 12

Arsenal sp - 1 PPS*12,11,9 these were surprisingly heavy...I might have just been in my head though

DB laterals and tricep press downs and extensions in there

So my ideal session is a fly or pec deck, and incline press, a flat press and another auxiliary chest movement so I need to mix it up more because last session was almost all flat so I messed up.

I was cramping later though so it worked kinda.

Glad to see you from my opinion getting a little itch back and enjoying training more etc. I’m also maybe a little jealous from all the different equipment you get to use haha

Lol. Yeah the last 7 or 8 sessions have been enjoyable.

Playing with the new stuff is fun, plus, I've still got my old gym, which is on the way to the new gym, I can go to when I feel like switching up.

There's no AC there so, maybe when it cools down or, I might start doing one of my leg sessions there since there's a wider variety of equipment that isn't at the new gym.

My biggest fear, the new gym has gotten busier...... I'm afraid it's gonna get too crowded in the next few months and I just can't deal with people.

It's kinda outside of the "big town" but next to a "small town" with nothing in terms of a big box gym within 15 minutes so, it's gonna be heavily used I'm guessing. The gym is a good size but, isn't nowhere near the size of a planet fitness or similar so, it won't take much for me to avoid it

Last 2 nights have been rough.

Crazy night sweats and all day headaches.

Blood pressure is good, not quite sure what is going on but, I assume I'm reaching the end of this current cycle.

Took some extra rest because I was actually afraid I was going to tear something in the gym I was so depleted...... Never have I sweat so much at night lol.

Took this week off since I started back on a "regular schedule"

Friday-Tuesday 6pm-6am . After being on call since May I figured I would need time to adjust without just killing my ability to sleep and it worked out pretty well.

I'll start back training regularly tomorrow.

Last night, when I got home after a full day and like 5k calories I went hypo. I'm wondering if this is happening while I'm asleep and that's why I'm sweating so much every night. Had an extra rice meal and was fine but, I got pretty low really quick which hasn't happened in a while.

lol 46 holy fuck. I’d of ate my arm off. Probably would have to wring out my shirt to.
When I go hypo it's very sudden. I'll feel a little off then it smacks me in the face. Was very surprised when I saw 46 though, I think I've seen a 42 before after post training shake but it's gotta be in the top 3 lowest I've got readings on.

Just trying to not look like shit yet. Trained legs at the hot gym today and it went well. Knees aren't bothering me but I didn't go too crazy since I took the week off.

Now that I'm more acclimated to the schedule I'll get back into my normal routine when I work this shift.

Onward and upward, don't get fat, don't lose muscle, hang onto what I've got, make slight improvements where I can and enjoy the ability to train.

Been a good few days.

Pull today was great. Crazy pump and strength is holding well despite missing some training last week.

The IL test is performing flawlessly but it's time to pull things back. Will start to cruise this next week most likely.

I've been training with minimal food before I go as well. If I eat my typical pre meal I can't get my ass back up to go and, I gotta wait to train so, just getting in a little food to tide me over has been the route. Just a little whey and cream of rice shake and we're off.

No drop in performance as I mentioned so I'll ride it out. The extra hour of sleep more then makes to for it

Sleep rocks!

Curious - for you, how do you know when it’s time to pull things back?

Been enjoying following along!

When I don't want to train is usually the biggest red flag.

In the past, I was just in the routine of not sleeping, feeling run down but still pushing. That turned into injuries and some crazy fatigue/sleep pattern changes that I needed a few months to correct.

When you are nodding off at 8 pm but after you open your eyes and you can't sleep till 6-7am, then you're up at 10-11 am to go train, things are wrong. Did that for around 3 years on top of 60-70 hour work weeks.

Today was triceps and rear delts.

Trying to adjust the split a bit so I'm getting enough rest but also enough work to maybe see some progress.

I've neglected these two areas a bit the last few months to try and get everything back up to par so I'll put the extra focus here for now.

5 sets of pec deck, rear DB flys and upper back rows

Super set those all with

5 sets of rope extension, cable JM presses and dual tricep extensions.

I was done in about thirty minutes since there was no stopping. Could have slept longer so next week I'll get an extra hour or two in.

Leg day today.

Just working around this old man stuff.

Shorter ranges, more tension, trying to avoid knee issues and not completely suck.

3 sets of adductors
3 sets of abductor
3 sets of extensions
2 sets pendulum
3 sets low close leg press
3 sets bodyweight heel elevated square
2 sets 1 leg press
2 sets of lying and seated hamstring curls

Beat the numbers last week but, my third set of pendulum the left knee had a shooting pain so I bailed. Wasn't an issue the rest of the session.

Hamstrings still have a little drop

Love the arsenal pendulum squat. I bought a knock off for my garage. It's almost as good but the arsenal is so smooth.

Yeah it's nice. This one isn't bolted down so it's a bit wobbly at the top lol
