I see the same post from new members all the time and everyone wants the same goal, "Lose Fat and Build Muscle." The Infamous Recomp, or as I call it, The Mental Ride from Hell.
You think recomp is gonna be easy?
For those wanting to try, here's my non-glorified experience....
Well, after being setback from surgery for pec tendon ruptures, another for shoulder joint blow out, another for 3 hernias, a stressful 22 month project at 80+ hours a week, I woke up fat and out of shape... again.
So i put my gasoline soaked underwear on but apparently the gates of Hell were locked so I did the next best thing, I decided to "Recomp."
Million Dollar Question: How long will it take to recomp?
Answer: Much longer than your mental stamina will likely last. This process is the most mentally challenging thing that you will likely ever endure especially since you probably struggle with psychological body-related issues like the rest of us.
Here we go....
AAS: I guess you could use Tren, or sorts, to speed up this process, but I don't due to heart reasons. At max, I've only ran up to 400mg T and 250mg NPP. My prescribed TRT dose is 200mg so I've kept it mild. I have used Triz which worked better for me than Reta. That's all.
Food: For the next 12-18 months you weigh and track every piece of food like it's a religion. You find yourself eating random shit at 10pm like 3oz of chicken, 1tsp of peanut butter, and and half of an apple, and 1 slice of cheese just hit your daily macros that you accidentally missed that day. Forget about restaurants altogether. They don't even exist. Meal planning, prepping, and eating becomes robotic and repetition. Same shit, everyday.
Training: This is your other new religion in addition to weighing your meals. Disciplined training! Tracking and logging workouts because for the next 12 months, an extra rep here or there is the only progress that your body dysmorphia will allow you to see. If you're over 40, you'll be training and working around your new aches, pains, and injuries. Training the rest days becomes more important and those additional weeks off, here and there, because "I knew that was a bad idea but did it anyway" will also slow your progress.
Progress Tracking: Besides rep count, there won't be any. Day in and day out you'll look in the mirror and never see a thing. Each day, your body dysmorphia will remind you that nothing is working. The scale will fluctuate daily based on glycogen replenishment and localized muscle immflamation from the training. Somedays you'll go up 3lbs, somedays you stay the same. Each day, you'll see no progress here. However, the goal in a "recomp" is never to actually lose "weight" so a stable scale COULD mean that it's working but because it's been 12 months already, you desperately want to see some form of progress to know that it's working.
A stable scale COULD also mean that nothing is happening, and trust me, this is the one that you'll believe. You can use a tape measure, but it won't be much help either. Its pretty hard to measure 1/64th of a inch change per week.
Keep in mind, that if you were able to build 10-12lbs of muscle per year, that's somewhere around 0.027-0.032lbs per day, and an astonishing 0.19-0.23lbs per week.
The Mirror: This lying bitch will become your new mortal enemy. I recommend destroying them all before you start. She will only help you with more stress and anxiety as the days go on and will only remind you that nothing is working.
Understanding the flaws with Dexa scans, this will become the best form of tracking that you'll have. Dexa day will be stressful and you'll have anxiety. What if it's not working? What if it worked but only alittle? Maybe I shouldn't have it done because I can't handle the results. Maybe i need to wait longer. When you decide to schedule one, make it quick. I don't recommend scheduling a week in advance because of this.
My Results: Over the course of 12 months of hell, one surgery, one herniated L5, one torn Lat, and one torn pec, and various shoulder hurts, I increased lean mass 9lbs and lost 11lbs of body fat for a grand scale differential of 2 whole ass pounds.
Conclusion: I want you to know, this shit ain't easy. It's not glorified. It's fucking work and it's a mental hell. I imagine that most give up and change their mind, but in too stubborn to quit. If you think it's for you then go outside, stand against the side of your house and push as hard as you can to try and move it. Give it all your effort. Do this for about 18hrs per day. Go out tomorrow and do it again. Repeat this for about a week. If after a week of exerting all of your effort, you're still motivated to move the house even though you can't see it moving, then maybe you're ready for a recomp.
Do I recommend it, nope. Not to the average person. Would I do it again, very likely but I'm different. Before I started, I pushed on my house for 6 months until my shoulder blew out trying to move it and as soon as the doctor clears me, I have a different approach and I think that I can get it to move this time.
If Hell is closed and you can't get a MMA fight with Satan, and you're too old for the Navy Seals, try a Recomp. It's the next best thing.
... and good luck with the house.
Disclaimer: Experiences may vary. This was mine.
