Have you guys noticed a real big difference of gaining muscle or strength from your 30s to your 40s? I just turned 48 and I look back about 10 years and realize that I was bigger and it seems I was stronger too. I’m trying to get back to that strength and size that I was 10 years ago but it seems harder now. Do you guys think there’s a real difference between your 30s and 40s with muscle size and strength?

If testosterone levels are comparable, no. I'm 49 and gain the same as I did in my 30's and 40's. Although training style, nutrition, etc are all important factors. The only thing I would say is different is recovery time, but even that isn't really noticeable yet.

I see the same thing with most clients btw.

That’s good to hear. I’m just going to keep grinding and hopefully I keep making gains . My test should be similar , since I still blast and cruise.

I think the biggest factor is keeping nutrition on point at this stage in our lives. We hopefully know how to train at this point and what we can recover from regardless of the split.

The question is, what else has changed in the past 10 years?

My 30s was my biggest and strongest with ease. But in all fairness I was also on a lot of aas. I'm only on HRT for like 8 years now.

I'm 47 myself. I train lighter but tbh I still look 90% as good as I did. For barely eating, no steroids, having several kids, I'm very happy tbh.

I see so many of my clients jacked out of their minds in their 50s, 60s and 70s. Especially the hrt guys. Being a long time bodybuilder or weightlifter pays off.

Also people think I am only 40.

This lifestyle makes many of us appear younger imo.

I took 7 years off of the gym and have been back for a year now.

Sorry I missed it how many years did you take off from the gym?

Jokes aside… are you really surprised then that you were bigger 10 years ago considering you’re back after a 7 year hiatus😆

No, not really. I just hope I can get there before my muscles waste away and I’m too old to get there.

That’s what the exogenous hormones are for!!

Head up man, be the best you you can be IN THIS MOMENT.

When you have a problem in life…

Can I do something about it? If yes… then why worry?

Can I not do something about it? If yes… then again, why worry?

In my 20's and 30's i put on a good amount of muscle naturally. In my 40's i added in anabolics and continued to grow. By around age 50 just maintaining the muscle i had started to be a loosing challenge. Now in my 60's i don't even pretend to carry anywhere near as much muscle as i once did. I find sarcopenia to be a real thing. I see most pro BBers' having a hard time maintaining their muscle by their mid if not late 40's. If someone has had time off or not trained well or ate well or at all then growing muscle later in life will be easier then some on who built a shit load. But that is just my opinion from 40+ years of lifting.

Thanks for all the comments. I have noticed I stay sore longer and my tendons hurt more than they used to. So working through pains seem to be the norm lol.

I find working through the pain from tendons can often lead to long term injuries which can slow or stop growth. Avoiding damaging tendons is towards the top of my list of things to do these days.

100%

Tendon/ligaments issues can mostly be avoided with appropriate form, frequency, volume, etc.

This week doing arms but bicep pain wasn’t there, so I had a good session! I miss the days of pain free and able to workout 6 days a week !

When you are younger you are new to AAS. I don’t really care what science says, but I feel that the first time you use a compound you’re gonna get the most out of it versus if you’ve used it 10 times. You also have the ability to put on more muscle when you’re younger, simply because you don’t have that muscle yet. I also feel that now that I’m older I really don’t care about my strength as much. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to use the same weights the high school kids are using, but I have no problem using a 35 pound plate instead of a 45 pound plate.

I was a fat fuck in graduate school in my late 20's and 30's man... thank God I got my shit together the last 5 years . Definitely in better shape now than ever. But I can imagine how 15-20 years ago it would have been easier to put on size and get in shape. Hoping to be a good example to my wife and kids, so they dont fuck up like I did . Currently working out 5-6 days a week, sometimes at 5 am before work , meal prepping etc
