EZ Curl Bar vs. Straight Bar: Which One is the Best?

by Matt Weik, BS, CSCS, CPT, CSN You’re not alone if you’re hitting the gym and feeling puzzled about when to use the EZ curl bar or the straight bar. It can be when you see both bars being used for various exercises. The good news is that we’re about to break it all down […]

The straight bar makes my dainty little girl wrists sore when I do curls
Ditto. My left wrist gets really stiff and sore (broke it when I was a kid and it wasn't quite set properly so it gets really unstable), so ezbar works better for me for 21's negatives and regular curls than straight bar.

And yes my wrists are small af...bad genetics no doubt!

Yeah man, my wrist will pop sometimes when I’m lifting. It’s usually not sore but something is def up with it

I wear wrist wraps when benching heavy dumbbells or even when doing rack pulls to keep wrists stable and the left one I tighten more than the right. Can pick up the 100's and get them into press position with less pain that way with wraps.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into grabbing some

I do both. EZ bar narrower, straight bar wider.

straight bar shoulder width grip for short head, ez narrow grip for long head

I like both, but my go to is the cambered bar on the cable, grab from the outer ends my right elbow pain kills me at the bottom, gotta start the pull weird so it doesn’t hurt, if I grab narrow no issues. Straight bar actual bar is nice, but hard asf in comparison, probably reason why most people don’t like it.

I still curl with a longbar... EZ curl bar for skulls.

I tore my bicep some 3 years into lifting using a straight bar and stopped using it as it seem twisting the wrist and arm to a less than natural position was not in my best interest. Mostly have done 1 arm movements for the last few decades with DB's and cables or machine usually 1 arm at a time. Occasionally i use the cambered bar. My very wide shoulders are not set up most bars or equipment.

Both are useful and interchangeable but as far as I’m concerned the ez curl bar wins just for the injury component alone. If you’ve been in this game long enough you will hurt yourself at some point and you’ll understand that wraps, and speciality bars and belts don’t mean you are a pussy, it means you are smart and want to be able to maintain your lifestyle well into those later years.

The only thing I really use a straight long bar for is Romanian deadlifts…. Lol I mean Romanian rack pulls, fuck them deadlifts… I got that girly back syndrome ya know?

I have a specialty t bar and landmine handles for rows but I’ll still do barbell rows…. With an ez curl bar… it feels so much better when performing barbell rows with an underhanded grip using the ez curl bar….. but given bicep tendon tears I shan’t be doing them that way, a-tall.
