Anyone else getting dry skin from Carnitine? I love it more then the mito peptides but it gives me a "sick" look.

Makes my already low tan pale and skin becomes dry. I stopped glutathione as it makes me so pale as well. I wonder what the lowest dose carnitine would be to not effect pigment. Any idea?

Either way, alot of people in the thyroid comunity is scared of carnitine as it shown to reduce/block uptake of thyroid hormones. weather thats propaganda studies or not (as you can also find studies on hypothyroid got too low levels of carnitine so how can it be bad if people with thyroid disease got to little). But it makes my skin dry as hell. wich amplify the pale sick look. basically kills all the benefits of all the collagen supps im using. drives me nuts

For those with hypothyroid how did carnitine effect you? seen some posts saying the skin stopped drying after getting on thyroid meds. wich indicate the correlation with carnitine n thyroid hormones.

I cant see a supplement thats this crucial for mitochondria and we basically fall appart without it - also being toxic for the throid. dosent make sense

About to start t3 in a few weeks so gonna take a break with carnitine

I also noticed my bedtime sweat came back after taking a week off carnitine, indicating ramped up metabolism (even tho carnitine burns fat it might make me more colder, notice this from reta as well)

And, have anyone noticed the difference in neck tension/joint pain on injection vs oral? seen posts on this as well that injections dosent causing neck pain but orals do. i get extremely stiff from it but counter with some mag. assume its the increase in choline. studies say it chelate calcium so one would think it reduces joint pain/tension. very strange. I always combine both so i havent tested to see if there is any difference yet

Carnitine can make some people’s skin look paler or drier. This seems dose-dependent and may also relate to thyroid status—if your thyroid is underactive, carnitine’s effects on skin/metabolism might be amplified.

Oral vs injectable may feel different: oral can sometimes cause neck/muscle tension, while injections might not, possibly due to differences in choline/acetylation effects.

Lower doses (e.g., 250–500 mg/day oral) can support mitochondria without strongly affecting thyroid or skin. Higher doses may interfere with thyroid hormone uptake.

Some notice metabolism changes: e.g., bedtime sweating returns when pausing carnitine, likely from shifts in energy use.

Magnesium can help with muscle/joint tension if you notice stiffness on oral carnitine.

Oral can also cause issues with TMAO.

I avoid Oral carnitines.... but I do enjoy my Ghost energy drink from time to time which has about a gram of Carnipure/LCLT.

I was thinking of trying carnitine and recently found out I have hypothyroidism, it's not too severe yet. I am receiving enough hormone, but not producing enough. Well struggling to produce enough.

Try EFA and omega supplementation? Also vitamin E which is in many omega blends.

Should fix it.

It’s not propaganda. There’s actual research on it, and can indeed inhibit uptake of t3 at a cellular level. This is regardless of whether the t3 is endogenous or exogenous and won’t reflect in bloodwork. Dr. Scott Stevenson has some great content on this subject both from a literature perspective AND real world (seeing clients have to increase t3 dose to little effect while in Carnitine, then see a massive weight drop after Carnitine cessation etc). It’s very interesting.

I personally don’t use l Carnitine for this reason. We have so many great performance and fat burning tools at our disposal anyways, I’d rather utilize ones that don’t potentially inhibit thyroid function. Many also appear to use it with seemingly no issues, so up to the user whether they want to use it or not.

Oral versions never did much for me in terms of performance or fat loss. ALCAR gave me a slight cognitive boost, but that was about it. Injectables, on the other hand, actually seemed to work. I especially like the Carnitine/Choline injectable blend.

Yeah the oral version has pretty terrible bioavailability, alongside the TMAO issue.

Saw that this could acually be a reason as well. to low EFA

I do think i remember the skin issues was wayy lower when i had my breakfust meal with eggs, omegas, coconut cream. but as i do fasting during the day ive been skipping it

It can also be due to reduction of sebum or what its called. so people with fatty skin issues get relife from it. And if already got dry skin it can become to much

So im my case, having hypothyroid making my skin dry, then adding a supplement that reduce sebum maby it becomes to much. but frustrating to not know weather its crashing your thyroid or just affecting sebum........ pretty crucial to know. blood thyroid tests are useless they dont even test reverse t3

Using iodine as well, at really high dosing, so it should be enough to cure hypo, but the increase in collagen after a few weeks gets 100% blunted when i add carnitine in. its so bizzare

Will try adding t3 and see if my thyroid is just super shot and iodine isent enough

Are TMAO the only reason for the fish smell? just got called out for smelling like total dog shit. i dont even smell it anymore. felt it the first few weeks in the shower post training. tought it was a detox reaction as it stopped

Thank god i wasent dating. nothing worse then bad smelling people

Wich dose you use?

That is suuper interesting

Any idea how much they had to raise the dose?

Yeah agree. im using all the mito supps but even with those i was chocked how well carnitine worked after just a week or two break. it must buffer the mito supps and work as a cofactor for them to work correct

So it feels like a huge waste to spend 100s every months on those and not even cover the basics like carnitine n methylation
