From what I've read they are pretty similar. Can anyone offer their experiences with either? Unfortunately I have come to the point where I'll need to start one or the other soon:/

Well I am the man to talk to ... I don't know if I have the energy tonight to get into it , however ALWAYS start with Finasteride ( Propecia ) that should hold you for years , it did me , after 10 years I was loosing ground and jumped on Avodart Dutasteride !!!! However more sides .... my only sides where a low sex drive , ( Hello Testosterone ) problem solved .... I am almost a poster boy for this shit , and I think god because it changed my life ..... I would be completely bald like my brothers , I would have ZERO confidence to achieve what I have business wise ... everybody is different , shave your head and it's fine , but I am not that guy , I would look like Cane from Kung Fu ... Watch the BALD Truth on YouTube with Spenser Corban .... I could go on and on about every product available ... Or stay off the gear and save your hair

How many mgs and for how long?
I've read anywhere from .5 to 2.5mg for 12 weeks. Sound about right?

Ok my doc prescribes me 1.0 mg of Avodart a day , that is 2 pills per day , if you are younger I would not recommend that , take is slow !!!! I will just say at 47 I have a full head of hair and I can run any compound I want and it doesn't matter ????? I think I am very lucky and a GREAT responder ... do not research this on a steroid forum , go on a hair loss forum like I used to do ... I am not being funny I am serious , hair loss can be devastating for some people including me and I am truly blessed I was one of the lucky ones ....

I've been on propecia for like 10 years. Noticed receding hairline in my early 20s. (I use generic finasterine 5mg split in 4). I've been losing the battle a little bit as I've gotten into my 30's. I've added minoxidil this year. I feel like it's helping. I also use nizoral. I will reevaluate it in a year.

Nizoral won't hurt , it has shown to block some DHT at the scalp , but don't hang the hat u might be wearing on it ... perhaps try Avodart ... Now I am lucky because I never had a receding hairline , just a extreamly diffuse thinner ... only a transplant will help , however Avodart can slowit or stop it and even grow in some fine hairs that are still there !!!!! Guys go on hair loss forum , I don't want to talk about this , I am sorry , like I said I have been VERY VERY LUCKY .... I have more hair today than 20'years ago ... it is crazy ...

I'm 36 and I see some thinning. I'm 60% grey already thanks to my dad and grandpa fml! Anyways summer is there a forum u suggest? Or maybe I'll just google it?

Yeah I feel like the hairline is the hardest to grow back.

Finasteride typically reduces DHT levels by 70% or so and dutasteride more like 97%... something like that. The latter drug blocks not one but two forms of 5-alpha reductase so DHT has a much harder time getting made out of T. These drugs are very similar to AIs in the way they block an enzyme to prevent T conversion.

Start with finasteride for sure. Sides are possible, read up. And some guys (rare tho) get very unlucky and get bad ED, sometimes permanent. Definitely read up on it. I've been taking finasteride for nearly 25 years and it's stopping the balding pretty damn well. Still have hair though thinning slightly and receding a little. Dunno if I'll bump it up to dutasteride or not.

Sumner's right, check out the hair loss forums. Tons of science there and good advice. This one has been useful for me:

Been reading a lot of hair forums this last hour. Shedding has me scared as fuck to start fina. I am now really just considering letting it take its natural course! If it's in your genes to be bald as I'm prestty sure it's in mine, then there's nothing you can do about it. I do have a round shaped head sonat least I'll look good shaved 👍🏼

That comes up a bit, but finasteride & dutasteride are the only REAL anti-baldness meds out there IMO. The others like nizoral and rogaine just kinda putter around the edges a bit, and maybe if you're real lucky (and real persistent) you can get a similar effect with 2% nizoral but the studies haven't supported that in the general case. Blocking DHT at the source to 70% or 90%+ reductions on the other hand is pretty hardcore... works for most, but also poses the biggest risk of sides. No free lunch.

Embracing baldness is the easiest and cheapest solution on the other hand. :D

Another way to stop balding in its tracks is to get castrated. Just sayin. No one seems to ever opt for that though.

Ha ha , Joe from Staten Island on the Bald truth YouTube show wanted to get castrated !!! Being a good looking young man and then going through something like balding is COMPLETLEY 100% devestsing ..... especially back in the late 80s and 90s when hair was sooooo important , and a shaved head was a freak .... So if you can inbrace it and look good with a shaved head , you win !!!! You definitely win ... if you can not PM me and I will at least give you my secret to a full head of hair ... well not really a secret , more of a lucky ass great responder!!!

Also if it means a lot to you , and I understand , don't run Gear , train hard and eat clean and just feel comfortable in your own skin ...
