The problem with gold is that it's TOO stable. Barely increases value when you adjust for inflation. HOWEVER, it is the safest play you can make to retain your wealth, just not make wealth. That's what the markets are good for.

I agree with @heavyiron as you NEVER buy any asset when in the green. First rule of investing. Only buy when there is blood in the streets and buy hard. Do the opposite of what most people think.
