Privacy & Security Update: 3-Device Setup for a Dedicated Privacy Phone

For members who want stronger privacy during initial setup, one practical approach is to use a dedicated Pixel phone running GrapheneOS, optional Silent Link service, Mullvad VPN with Lockdown Mode, and public Wi-Fi during setup.

This does not create perfect anonymity. It does not defeat every possible form of tracking. What it does is reduce unnecessary identity overlap during setup between your personal phone, home network, carrier account, payment activity, and forum-related accounts.

The 3-device method is only for the beginning. Once the final GrapheneOS Pixel is set up, it should operate on its own and should not need continued support from the first two devices.

Initial Setup: Why 3 Devices?

The purpose of using three devices at the beginning is to avoid doing every setup step from the same phone.

For the initial setup:

Device 1 is used to visit Silent Link and start the order.
Device 2 is used to pay the crypto invoice and receive the SMS text/code.
Device 3 becomes the final GrapheneOS privacy phone.

After setup is complete, Device 1 and Device 2 are no longer part of the ongoing workflow.

Device 1: Silent Link Order Device

Use a separate phone or temporary device on lawful public Wi-Fi to visit Silent Link, choose the service needed, and generate the crypto payment invoice.

Do not use home Wi-Fi, work Wi-Fi, personal email, personal accounts, personal payment cards, or your personal phone number. Do not log into anything that connects back to your everyday identity.

Device 1 is only used for the initial order step.

Device 2: Crypto Payment and SMS Device

Use a different device or wallet to pay the Silent Link invoice with crypto.

On Device 2, open the crypto wallet, scan or copy the payment invoice from Device 1, confirm the destination and amount, and send the payment.

Device 2 should also be the device used to receive the SMS text/code needed for setup or verification. This keeps the payment and SMS step separate from the final GrapheneOS phone.

Do not log into forum accounts from this device. Do not use it as the final privacy phone. Do not connect it to the final forum identity.

Device 2 is only used for the initial payment and SMS text/code step.

Device 3: Dedicated GrapheneOS Pixel

This is the final phone.

Use a supported unlocked Pixel and install GrapheneOS using the official installation process. After installation, lock the bootloader, set a strong PIN or passphrase, keep automatic updates enabled, and avoid installing unnecessary apps.

Do not sign into personal Google accounts. Do not import contacts. Do not restore backups. Do not connect to home Wi-Fi during setup. Do not pair personal Bluetooth devices, your car, earbuds, smartwatch, or anything tied to your daily identity.

Device 3 should be used only after the setup pieces are ready. This is the phone that will hold the final privacy-focused accounts and ongoing forum activity.

Remember: any phone service or SMS service still has limits. No-KYC or privacy-focused services may reduce account identity exposure, but they do not remove the technical realities of mobile networks. If you do not want the phone talking to cell towers, keep airplane mode on and re-enable Wi-Fi only.

Mullvad VPN Setup

Install Mullvad VPN on the GrapheneOS Pixel. Create or use a Mullvad account without personal information. Pay with crypto only, and fund at least one year upfront to reduce repeated payment activity.

Enable:

  • Auto-connect
  • Lockdown Mode
  • Always-on VPN
  • Block connections without VPN
Then test it. Disconnect the VPN and confirm that internet access stops. This helps prevent apps from quietly reconnecting over public Wi-Fi if the VPN drops.

A VPN is not invisibility. It protects the network layer, but it does not fix bad habits, reused accounts, browser fingerprinting, personal writing patterns, time-zone leaks, or information you voluntarily post.

Ongoing Use

After the initial setup is complete, the final GrapheneOS Pixel is the only device needed.

Ongoing use should be simple:

Use the dedicated Pixel.
Keep GrapheneOS updated.
Keep Mullvad active.
Keep Lockdown Mode enabled.
Use mobile/SMS service only when needed.
Avoid personal accounts.
Avoid home Wi-Fi if separation matters.
Install as few apps as possible.

Device 1 and Device 2 are not needed after setup unless you choose to repeat the process later.

Final Account Setup

Create forum, email, or messaging accounts only after the privacy stack is ready:

GrapheneOS installed
No personal accounts added
No home Wi-Fi used
SMS text/code handled separately if needed
Mullvad active
Lockdown Mode enabled
Block connections without VPN enabled

Keep personal accounts, personal recovery emails, personal phone numbers, personal payment methods, and personal Wi-Fi off this device.

The clean setup is:

Initial Device 1: start Silent Link order on public Wi-Fi
Initial Device 2: pay the crypto invoice and receive SMS text/code
Final Device 3: install GrapheneOS, Mullvad, and create accounts

After that, the final GrapheneOS Pixel is the standalone privacy device.

Privacy works best through careful setup, minimal apps, and consistent habits. The cleaner the setup, the less unnecessary identity overlap you create.
