I had a range instructor that was gay, my wife told me and I was furious she said it out loud, dude was good at his job and no one seemed to care, he wasnt one of those fairy types he was a pretty tough dude. If you do your job no one will bother you, no of this shit matters if you can perform, it matters when you constantly fail yet get promoted because we need to fill a quota

One of my things was the small stuff. The mantra was “don’t sweat the small stuff”, people thinking if you worry about the big things, the small things take care of themselves.
I think the opposite is true. If you instill a sense of pride, duty and looking good in uniform, that ripples out into doing the big things that matter.

Regardless, ALL things matter, the big and the small and in between. Looking into any being concerned with only one facet is laziness.

I find that super disrespectful.... as should you... we still have people who served in world wars that friends of theirs gave their lives for our freedom. it may not mean as much to the newer generations but they paved the way for us. Not really sure how you even got through typing that.

OK bud. First off, blow me. Yeah, there may be outliers.... But you show me a group of 100 recruits, any branch of service, at any MEPS location, and I'll show you 100 people who joined for the sign-on bonus, family medical benefits, G.I.Bill, life insurance, paycheck, advancement opportunities, citizenship opportunities, etc..... The last breath of their answer to the question, "Why did you join?" may be something about "Oh, my dad was in, or I wanted to serve my country." But that's usually about the extent of it.

BTW, every conflict has had its fair share of people who contributed very little. This may come as a shock to you, but believe it or not, not every WWII vet stormed the beach at Normandy or got dropped into Sicily DZ. There's a whole lotta Vets out there, young and old, wearing campaign hats, looking for a "Thank me for my service" that didn't actually do shit. So take your high horse somewhere else.

I'd love to hear where you think we are starting a war and then where you think we shouldn't be starting a war.

I'd assume you are talking about the boats we blew up but I dont think anyone wants to go to war with us and that's the point stop taking advantage of our people. We Dont want to go to war but we will not be taken advantage of anymore and that includes the killing of our people. I'm very proud of where we are going. We are the best and now we are playing the cards we have held back for so long.

I dont care if anyone thanks me for my service, but I was in when people didnt give a shit either, its kinda nice to be appreciated and I hope its lasts cause my uncle was a nam vet and they would get spit on

I mean everywhere there is a shitty employee doesnt mean it's a shit company or idea. I dont mind that you dislike some but dont put them all in the same category there is alot of proud people that serve this country. You're being disrespectful to them and thats wrong. It's a thought you should keep to yourself if you have it or tell a group of democrats that hate america but alot of people here served and I wouldn't disrespect any one of them with that bullshit. I'm sure they all have seen a bad apple or multiple and wish they didnt sign up but that doesnt mean disregard everyone.

Jesus H. Some of you guys are like fucking women around here. Everything's all or nothing, hot or cold. Reread what I said, and if reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, read it once more. My point isn't that there aren't people who have a strong patriotism about them and what they're doing, but that's almost never the sole reason they join. So to imply they (we) served anyone but ourselves and our own best interests is nonsense. We got paid and paid well, and in most cases, continue to be paid long after our contracts expire. We knew full well the dangers we were getting ourselves into. There hasn't been a draft lottery since December 1972, for fuck sake. Outliers like the random Vietnam or Korea vet are the exception now... Not at all the norm.

Anyway, so you're just assuming that I'm on the left because I'm not automatically buying into the "worship me for my service" routine? You're actually quite wrong. I'm pretty dead center and for the most part, couldn't give a fuck less about politics. But since you brought politics into it (and I’m assuming you lean to the right due to your assumption that I don't), I have to laugh at how the same folks who love to call people “snowflake” constantly want to be treated like they’re special themselves.

This is the problem with the "Thank ME for MY Service" diarrhea that has permeated the ranks for years now. Everyone thinks they're special and they deserve all this extra shit. Free meals here, special discounts there; everyone with their fucking hands out saying "HEY YOU, THANK ME!" When what they really need to be doing is remembering that they're not fucking special and get their asses back to work. I dealt with this shit as a Squad Leader, Drill Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, and as a First Sergeant.

It's a fucking cancer. No, Private, you're not special. No, First Sergeant, you're not special. No, Colonel, you're not special. Each one of you is a cog in the machine and easily replaceable, and your government doesn't give an actual fuck about you.

This is asinine, so the fellas that work in the motor pool don't count? How about the Naval Flight Officers, since they're not pilots and actually dropping the bombs? Do pilots even count? Looks like only 11Bs count in your book. This may come as a shock to you, but there's got to be some pogues to get shit done, otherwise the door kickers wouldn't be able to do their job.

Just like at my work place we got 9 people and it's a mom and pops type business. EVERYONE matters we all have an important job and it wouldn't work without everyone.

NGL I grew up pretty sheltered, I didnt grow up with my Dad.. and just started following politics so I couldn't agree more with you. I'm always trying to learn tho :)
 
I cringe a little when people started saying “Thank you for your service.”
I first started hearing it during Desert Storm. My intial thought was “Hey, I am American. I did it for me, too.” I did think it was good because I notice a lot of Vietnam veterans coming out of the woodwork. It was about time they got some form of recognition.

But that was over 30 years ago.

Now, although it still happens and I still cringe, I also think we who did and do serve are the outliers.
People from every generation of my family served, willing or not. But I am the last, and I joined in 1983.
Not only are young people way more egocentric today, not willing to sacrifice anything, many, many are not even qualified. I stood (and duck walked) in my skivvies at MEPS in 2010 and you aren’t going to convince me of anything different. Even in the last few years, the mental health, hypochondriac nature and other factors pushed on these kids make the several ticked boxes on their DD Form 2807-1 absolutely disqualifying.

What do I mean by sacrifice when the pay is pretty damn good these days and the standards so relaxed it must be pretty easy to serve?
Who would volunteer to go to a prison camp, be living in cramped conditions, be told what to do, when to do it, what to eat, when to eat it and be around a bunch of people you really can’t stand? On top of that be worked relentlessly for as much as 24-36 hours straight, with no real meals or rest.
Because that’s what my last two deployments were like. And I volunteered for both. But at least no one was shooting at me or trying to blow me up.
For the most part anyway.

So yeah man, it is “service” and very few of our population want to do it.

Veterans are looked down on enough by a large part of the population. We don’t need to be hating on each other. Hell, I won’t entertain discussion about veterans with those who didn’t serve. I call them “freedom loaders”.
Lots of those types here. Wanting civil war, talking tough, but couldn’t give four years of their lives for the “Murica” they are so quick to talk big about, flying their Chinese made Walmart flags from their big pickup trucks.
Some of them “almost got their legs blown off by and IED”…..at the Whataburger or Golden Corral, apparently.

I do get annoyed when I see some fat fuck with a “disable vet” hat, when the reality is he is disabled because he is fat and he served four years in one of the branches of the military between 18-22, 30+ years ago. We’ve all seen them.
I sometimes wear a hat that signal military. I do it mostly when I travel as a flag so perhaps a brother sees it and wants to share sea stories. I am also very proud of that ship, of which I am a plankowner. She was in service for 37 years so the odds are pretty good. But that was only two of my 27.

I have a joke I told my son the cop. He gets people all the time who volunteer the info they are vets. He tells them “My dad was in the service. The garbage service.”
It’s a little disrespectful but he says the good dudes laugh. The posers get pissed.
