Which gun would you choose?

Just as an example, I witnessed an incident in a crowded public venue where the shooter dumped 10 rounds of 9mm to neutralize a threat... all 10 over-penetrated, 8 other people got hit, including a 9yr old girl who died.

Its not the most effective round, even though its cheaper and readily available.
My edc for work and regular life is a G35 Competition Glock, .40cal w/15rnd mag
Its a workhorse, never failed once, the stopping power is superior, and over-penetration is much less of an issue, which is important for self-defense liability for both home and public settings.
I carry 10mm with underwood JHP. Underwood make the proper 10mm loads. The 40 cal is its cousin.

So why have police and fbi changed back to the 9mm?

I'll take one of each? 🤷 From the list? Probably the 226. I personally use Beretta and Taurus. The Taurus is a .40 cal subcompact for EDC. Knock 'em all you want I've never had one single issue.

I am not familiar with these 226 variants, but the standard P226 is an absolutely phenomenal weapon. I can’t think of a more reliable, accurate and all around excellent gun. The downside is that they are pretty damn heavy. You can get them in other calibers if you subscribe to the notion that 9mm isn’t a good round.

Simple operation and very safe. You aren’t going to shoot that first round in double action unless you really want to. After that it is “game on”.

The P226 was my first pistol. The VP9 was my son’s first.
The SEALs can use whatever they want and many carry other guns such as the Glock. But the predominant secondary weapon is the P226.

lots of good information.
I thank you all.

to answer many and move the thread forward:
I don't have any particular needs for competitions or similar things.
I keep it mainly for self-defense although I pray to God every day that I never, ever have to use it for this purpose.
for the rest, I have fun at the range or somewhere outside the city where I can shoot without anyone being alarmed.

I don't like guns that are too small.
sure they are comfortable to keep in your pocket, but... holding them in my hand and shooting with them is not for me.
full size, single action, even if there are some very good and very nice strikes... I can mention the sig sauer p320 lx5 legion

and the RUGER AMERICAN® PISTOL COMPETITION,

the sar9 sport gen3 which I could take into consideration,

as well as the two smith and wesson

You had it right at the top with the Sig P226. I am a S&W guy but have shot a number of Sig weapons and all have been flawless. They also have excellent customer service and support.

I have a few Sigs have always been good to me. Also got a couple Springfield xd subcompact, one in 9mm and one in .40cal, usually carry the 40 during winter, when I have more clothes. Summer usually a sig p926 in 9mm, it will fit in my shorts pocket.

Check out sgt1911, on YouTube, he does a bunch of different pistol reviews

Could this be due to the type of ammo used?

From studies I have seen 9mm isn’t much different any more. The other issue people have with anything larger than 9 is muzzle control with recoil. It allows people who don’t shot often to be more accurate.

The guy was trained LE, he hit the target with every round.
Idk the exact ammo brand/configuration used, other than it was 9mm. The rounded/coned tips on most 9mm def contribute to over penetration.

Flathead .40cal rounds tumble after initial impact, which leads to a higher degree of trauma on the target and leaves far less velocity if they penetrate.

Coned tip 9mm is more like a target arrow, they tend to go straight through without losing much velocity.

Hollow points can mitigate some of that, but the shards can also over penetrate and now you have sharp shrapnel going in many unprdictable directions.

Which gun would you choose?

Beyond the price, which one would you choose among these?

Do you have any other advice while staying with a 9mm single action and not a compact one?

Choose one that parts will always be available for and keep a lot of them …. Thats why a 9 mm is the better hand g…

The only 2 guns on those I can comment on are the HK and Beretta. Both have been great and both are on the bigger side and accurate.

I have a HK P30L, I trust it enough to keep on my nightstand, but when I got it, it was a bit finicky with ammo and didnt cycle properly. Switched ammo and it has been mint ever since. Pricey.

I also have a Beretta M9 that I keep in my bug out bag because if SHTF its reliable and I know I can find parts. I also like the heft.

Have heard good things about a few of the others but cant comment because no personal experience. I am not looking for a pretty gun or a match shooter, I am very utilitarian.

Sig, HK, and Beretta are all great guns. Personally not a fan of oversized pistols though. I like the Sig XMacro Comp, 3" barrel, built in comp, with 17 round mag.

Of course my favorite pistol is the Yugo M57, shoots 7.62x25, good luck finding that though. :)

Just picked up the Sig p365 for CCW. Nice so far but NJ makes me get all my mags modified to 10 rounds. (Which just makes me buy more mags)
