Get Shredded!
First off, this isn't really a log, it's more of an experiment. The goal here is to lower my LDL cholesterol, while raising HDL cholesterol with otc supplements.
A little background. I've had shitty cholesterol levels pretty much my entire life. A gift from my parents. About 20 years ago, a doctor talked me into taking a statin drug and have been on 20mg atorvastatin per day ever since. I tried coming off on my own about ten years ago. But follow-up blood work showed elevated LDL levels, so I resumed the statin.
Fast forward to present day. Last week, I dropped the statin and ordered a fish oil supplement and Policosanol by Pure Encapsulations. The reason I went with this brand is because my naturopathic doctor in California swore by the quality of the ingredients. We shall see if the extra money was worth it.
I eat very clean, so my diet will remain largely unchanged. I get my protein from chicken breasts, salmon, lean ground beef, egg whites, whole eggs, etc.
Dosing protocol will be one fish oil capsule with my first meal of the day and one policosanol (20mg) with my last meal of the day.
At about the 90-day mark, I will pull blood work and compare them to the ones below. These were pulled at the end of last year, but should still be accurate.
This won't be a very active log, so shoot me any questions or comments if you have them.

I've been taking red yeast extract since my 30s to help with high cholesterol. Jay Cutler suggested in one of his podcasts to use NaturesPlus Herbal Actives Red Yeast Rice, Extended Release and it works better than any of the other ones i have tried in the past. I also take omega 3s. I can always use something natural that might work better or add it to the mix.

This one is the best in the USA, has actual monacolin-k in it (natural lovastatin).
I had the consumer-reports study years ago of all the top ones tested, this was the real deal. (With zero metals/toxins).
FDA made them change their label as they had it stated on it how much monacolin-k was in it. Really good stuff...

♦ Nature's Plus Herbal Actives Red Yeast Rice extract is uniformly standardized to a minimum of 1.7% (10.2 mg) total monacolins.

Thanks man! If this doesn't work, I'll be looking for other options. Definitely won't be going back to the statin

I think the whole LDL thing is a bit of propaganda, most healthy people LDL is higher naturally, what you really want to watch is if your trigyclerides are extremely high and hdl is extremely low. I've never worried about my cholesterol, my bloodwork is always great in that regard. Definitely will never put a statin in my body either, pure poison.

Also, PURE is a great brand, they definitely have high quality stuff. I take their magnesium glycinate because no one else seems to carry it but it's worth the money I think.

Subbed, what are your numbers? My family has high cholesterol as well doesn’t matter what, it is high. I was recently prescribed a statin, I would love to come off it if I can.

The first two pictures I posted above are of my numbers with reference ranges. LDL 81 mg/dL and HDL 32 mg/dL. Not awful numbers by any stretch of the imagination, but LDL will climb now that I'm off the statin.

Well wesley ,

You know this has been an issue for me and I am constantly working towards raising my hdl ,
Lower LDL . I will watch this one closely as I use similar supplements but I have not used Pure Encapsulations. They are pretty expensive and have a good reputation (one of the companies bought out by Nestle’s new Health Science). I have not tried Policosanol yet but, I’ve read papers on the blend of alcohols derived from the sugar cane plant waxes. I love seeing if I can beat my prior bloods, (my ARNP gives me “the statin talk” when I’ve blasted and my ratios are jacked . Appreciate it

Pure Encapsulations are definitely on the pricey side. Thanks for confirming the brand rep. My naturopathic said pretty much the same thing. In comparison, my stain is dirt cheap. A 90-day supply of atorvastatin runs about $20 with insurance.
I'm trying to keep my expectations low, just in case I don't get the desired results. But like I said earlier, I won't be going back to the statin. I appreciate your support Max

GW works absolutely amazing. That’s all I take with a glass of Metamucil and my cholesterol is 140. Never taken statins in my life.

Be very careful with Red Yeast Rice. It doesn’t interact with many drugs and I had a friend that had full on Rabdomyalisis because of it and had to be admitted to hospital. Just make sure it interacts with what you are taking. It does work for those who don’t have the issue.

This looked interesting so i purchased it, although i have some from zenement from overseas and it also has coq10 in it as well…. I havent tried either yet because the only times i ever tried statins caused me to get blood clots yes u read that correctly… doctors basically said statins might be worse for me…. So i will see what the doc says

I tried crestor @ 5 mlg 2-3x per week and within the first 4 weeks had a dvt in my left calf…. So i will discuss with doc before i move fwd but i truly need to lower mine and get a ct scan as its been yrs since i last had one

I take Ativan every so often when I'm stressed. I have no interactions with GW-501516 or GW-0742 or yed yeast extract or anything I have found.

I can't believe doctors are actually okay with cholesterol markers being this low. Most normal healthy people are not going to have LDL under 100, lol. This stuff actually plays important roles in the body, you cant just crush it down to 0 just because 'cholesterol bad.' I actually had a friend tell me his doctor said he'd be happier if his ldl was at 0. I was like wtf dude, find another doctor before they kill you.

Most medical doctors are still taught the cholesterol myth that cholesterol is the cause of heart disease. When one of cholesterols purposes is to repair damaged arteries. Maybe people should stop stuffing the simple sugars and vegetable oils that cause the damage in the first place.
