I always thought this although I do not know what pay is but seems like alot of hours, it would take way more gear than I could use to be compensated fairly.

I'm still pinning AY gear almost 2 years later (and it still fucking rocks) not a huge inconvenience. You are right though, good shops pay more then you can use. I'm sure that there are more of those that don't do that, then those that do.
