Most guys are inspired by the
"Rocky" movies and will hit the
gym and do ridiculously intense
workouts after seeing one. Radical
changes in exercise intensity or
duration can have negative effects
on anabolic hormones such as IGF-
1, which promotes muscle growth
and strength. Researchers from
the U.S. Army Research Institute
of Environmental Medicine in
Natick, Massachusetts found
decreases in IGF-1 levels in people
who increased energy expenditure
by 1,000 calories per day through
exercise. Consuming more calories
or protein had no effect on the
decrease in IGF-1. This was an
important study for bodybuilders:
athletes cannot eat more calories
or protein to compensate for
large boosts in training volume or
intensity. Sudden changes in your
exercise program can suppress
muscle growth factors that
determine gains in muscle mass
and strength. Don't overtrain!
