My kids are both in college now. My wife and I still make sure to have a nice candy stockpile to handout to the hundreds of trick or treaters that converge on our neighborhood.I LOVE Halloween.
My youngest is 8 and 10, only a couple more years of excitement about costumes and trick or treating.

I tried to post a pic of my house from last year. Unfortunately the size is too large. That's awesome. I feel like Halloween is one of the last bastions for childhood. People don't celebrate it like they used to and covid dang near killed it. I've been noticing more than a few like minded people have really stepped up their decoration game last year and this one. People are working hard to bring it back.

I ran fog machines on the front porch with torch style bulbs in my light fixtures. I also had multi colored strobes through the shrubbery to light the fog.
I set up a projector and used the garage door to show the movie Hocus Pocus (my wife loves that movie for some reason). We didn't do anything over the top or extravagant. Just simple lighting and atmospheric effects. The kids still loved it. The parents loved the movie. Kids had to drag their parents away. We had several families make a second trip down the street.
That's a lot. And way more than most do. I feel bad for the kids who have to travel dark streets and visit darker houses. Houses that only leave a bowl of candy on the front porch and can't be bothered to answer the door. I mean, I get it if they are older or have health issues that prevent them from getting up and down to go to the door. But most are just too lazy. Growing up, most of the neighbors were passing out candy, treats, etc. Now, the majority of the houses are dark. Kids are lucky to get over 50% participation from houses on a street.
Halloween is one of the rare times that neighborhoods come together any more. It is literally the one time of year that I see most of my neighbors. It's cool to see the kids in these "once a year snapshots" and see how fast they grow up. Kids will be looking for their favorite decoration in the yard every year. Parents will comment on the changes and tell you how much they appreciate the effort and how much it reminds them of their childhood. The parents are usually as excited as the kids are when they hit my house.
My current house is the first house I have ever owned in a subdivision. I have always lived in rural areas or on the coast. I live in a military town, and with that a natural unity is formed. My neighborhood is comprised of active, inactive, and retired military vets, police officers, etc.

The 4th of July and New Year's Eve sound like a war zone with the fireworks. Everyone gathers outside, no matter the weather and celebrate the holiday at hand.
Our first year here was also the introduction of Covid. I said screw it, and my neighbors and I threw a 4th of July block party. There was music, food, beer, and alcohol. We launched fireworks nonstop for 5 hours. Would you believe that no one got sick with the Chinese flu? We were playing cornhole, beer pong, had slip and slides, basketball games, etc. County officials and officers that live in the neighborhood enjoyed our little party.
It doesn't sound like reality, but it is. I live in a good neighborhood with great people. Just don't screw with any of us, we are all well armed.
My family and I are already looking forward to Oct 31st and the fun that will be had. I have one neighbor that will be passing out candy to the kids, and adult beverages and water to the parents walking and supervising. Another neighbor plans to fire up a massive grill and give away hotdogs to anyone that wants a snack. If my brother shows up at my house this year he will likely offer regular and adult cider (what else would you expect from a Marine)?
Maybe! LOLI LOVE Halloween.
