So about 2 1/2 months ago i tore my distal bicep tendon, luckily my va doctor is a fucking retard and turned my mri in as a shoulder tear and long story short to late to fix. Im no stranger to tears i have a torn pec and a tear in my shoulder which are both from a injury i got in the military. Tore the bicep at work i assume from over compensation issues all my shit is the same side lol. Im back to training somewhat normal again my question is does anyone else on here have this same injury that was never fixed and do you think i can still maintain a decent about of muscle for this . I just can’t win i somehow have still maintained a muscular build despite the issues but lately im pretty disgusted with myself. I have a life outside lifting obviously I don’t make a living competing, photoshoots and all that but as far as living the bodybuilding lifestyle i do a pretty decent job. It just sucks knowing no matter how hard you work just never be aesthetic.

Get a second opinion. There's a doctor somewhere that can fix it. I really doubt it's too late after 2.5 months. I was at 5-6 weeks out from the same injury before I had surgery.

just had one fixed a year ago. doc told me it needed to be repaired with 2 weeks. Yours obfviously is not a complete tear?

I ruptured mine completely but was surgically repaired within 2 weeks. A friend at work torn his completely but the dr told him it was just a strain because of the lack of bruising in his arm. So he didn’t get an mri. It never healed so he finally went back to a different doc and ordered the mri to show it was a complete tear. He then got it repaired and it had to have been close to 5 / 6 months post injury. He’s back to probably 80% (might not get any better than 80%) but other than the horrendous scarring from the scalpel you wouldn’t know he ever ruptured his tendon.

there is still hope.

Let me get some clarification here:

You tore your bicep at the distal head (inner elbow), and the surgery got fucked due to the VA messing up the diagnosis. So are you saying you never had the surgery to have it repaired? Or you did and you’re just wondering whether it will go back to normal?

Once I know this I can give some input as I fully tore mine in a competition back in 2018 and have since recovered and gained my strength back to the point where I literally have zero problems and don’t notice the difference.

I've torn both and never bothered to get them repaired, figured they were just biceps and just went with an overhand grip on deads. Not one of my better decisions

I had a complete distal tendon rupture in 2017 and had surgery within two weeks with no issues.

Although you are outside the 2-3 week window, surgery still may be an option for you. I have heard of guys having surgery 1 to 10 years post injury. You will most likely need a tendon graft (allograft) and recovery time will be longer.

My recommendation is to meet with a few orthopedic surgeons that specializes in shoulders/hands to see what they say.

Yea i never got it repaired the bicep sets higher now obviously. But yea they ordered the wrong mri and now i was told its to late. I was a full tear whole arm was bruised.

Okay just needed to know what exactly we’re dealing with.

Knowing that, here’s what I’ll say:
1. You will never get the kind of strength back in that arm that you had before if you do not have constructive surgery to reattach the tendon to the bone. It’s just a fact. Of course it will heal, the body will always heal itself from trauma as long as it’s within the mortal limits. But as far as function, you will never regain that strength/mass/use without repair, period.

2. If you do get it repaired, which I highly suggest you do, it will still sit a bit higher than the undamaged side. This is because the tendon is shorter than the other side due to them having to trim the frayed edges of the tendon off to attach it back to the bone. Think about a mop head: that’s what your torn tendon looks like at the torn end right now.

3. The VA fucking sucks, I would ask to be referred out to an actual musculoskeletal specialist, which would NEVER make that mistake and could perform the surgery and get you squared away. Goodluck brother.

I tore the long head bicep and peck major in early spring. I was at work so had to see workman comp surgeon. He said the both would heal and I would be fine. Tore the peck some more in December. Pick is first tear. I need to get back in and see a surgeon again.

You need to see an independent doctor not one that works for your employer

Zoinks scoob!!!

I had an acute rupture of the bicep where it attaches to the shoulder about eight months ago. The ortho said that the best course of action was to do nothing. I was lucky that it settled in a good spot and have very little deformity.
The doctor said that in all his years in practice, he has only surgically repaired three, at the patients insistence. He felt that he did them a disservice.
I have no loss of strength at this point, and my bicep peak is better on the torn side.

Good Luck!

My quad tear surgery was at like week 5 because the insurance was fighting covering it. I should sue them because I had a significant harder time healing the quad because of the delay. Also the muscle atrophied and had to be pulled harder, so it is way shorter and tighter as result.

My tricep tear this last year, I got that surgery at week 2-3? They made me intentionally wait because they wanted swelling down.

I'm no expert on the topic but my surgeon def said the surgeries can be done weeks later, but that the progress and healing would be more difficult the longer I wait. Based on my experiences, what he said came true.
