Victor Martinez responds to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s call for drug testing in pro bodybuilding.

Victor Martinez understands the ramifications more than most when it comes to steroids and bodybuilding. He was arrested and nearly deported for selling steroids – and it’s something that brought his pro bodybuilding career to a grinding halt. One that he’s still finally just recovering from all these years later. So what does he think about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s call for drug testing in pro bodybuilding? In our latest GI Exclusive, Victor Martinez explains his position on drug testing for steroids and other PEDs in pro bodybuilding.

Victor Martinez makes his opinion on drug testing for steroids clear right off the bat – he believes that the more you regulate a drug, the more it will be used. He believes that for any drug, not just steroids and other PEDs in sports. So when it comes to drug testing in bodybuilding – he thinks that it will do nothing to actual help with the health of aspiring bodybuilders as they prepare to become pro athletes.

He also believes that it will diminish the quality of the sport as a whole. If the drug testing is effective, the physiques will become lower quality. This will cause the audience to be less engaged and the attendance to go down. This means less money for the sport. Ultimately, Victor believes this will bring bodybuilding a step back rather than forward.

Victor Martinez also makes it clear that the legality of a drug doesn’t always mean it’s morally wrong to use a drug. He uses marijuana as an example. Now that states are becoming more lax and legalizing the drug in many places – does that make all of the people arrested for possession and selling of weed suddenly good people? Or does that simply mean they were always on the right side of morality – and the country is just catching up?

Ultimately, Victor does think that athletes should not publicly endorse steroids. He thinks that will lead to a bad influence for younger kids who look up to athletes. What an adult decides to do with their body is one thing – but if kids get the wrong idea and jump into a drug too early, that can be incredibly damaging.
