near miss by a sneaky football field-sized asteroid

    https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article...teroid-2019-ok

Most asteroids hitting the Earth's atmosphere become meteors but not meteorites -- i.e. they burn up before touching the ground. How big does it have to be to make planetfall? I had to look this one up... the rule of thumb is 80' in diameter, or the size of a very large house. So this one that missed us would've been plenty big enough to obliterate a small town and make a cool new crater.

It came within 48,000 mi. That's well inside the Moon's average orbit of 239,000 mi, and about twice as far as the geostationary satellite belt at 22,300 mi. It was traveling 55,000 mi/hr so it took several hours to pass thru.

Quick Earth/Moon system scale primer... If we make 1" = 1,000 mi, then:

Earth is 8" in diameter -- a volleyball.
Moon is 2" dia. -- a billiard ball.
    The Moon is 20' away.
The ISS is less than 1/2" above the surface of the Earth (and zooming around at 17.5"/hr, taking 90 mins to orbit... too slow to notice at this scale)
Geostationary (e.g. weather, tv, internet) satellites are 2' away.
This asteroid passed within 4' of us.
But the asteroid itself would be invisible at this scale -- 1/20,000 of 1".

Alright, end of space physics lecture lol.
