Hey guys I am 41 and have been running cycles for a few years now. 3 days ago I did an extremely vigorous biceps and triceps workout. The next day and even now my Left Bicep is puffy and hard as a rock. My right bicep is just the opposite. It feels like a flat tire. Even when I flex there is no puffiness and it feels like touching a marshmallow. The day after my workout I did have a little pain in the bend of my arm ( Nothing Unbearable) just a little sore and tight. So today I go back and do a decent bicep and tricep workout hoping to get some pump and hardness back in my right bicep ( Still feels like a marshmallow ). Has this ever happened to anyone here ? Any advice ? Thanks

Now take everything I say with a grain of salt because I'm not a real expert....

It could be that you might have some kind of nerve damage/injury. When I tore my ulnar nerves completely from the muscle/nerve channels, I had similar symptoms in my forearms and to a lesser extent my biceps. The muscle wouldn't contract properly, and it would feel kind of rubbery when pushing on it. The majority of my arms from the mid-bicep to my fingers almost completely lost feeling/sense of touch, except for the nerves and surrounding myelin sheath would have fairly extreme shooting pain, which was random when relaxed or constant when I tried to pick anything up.

Yours is most likely something different, but it sounds familiar. Maybe you overtaxed the nerves in your arm? I'd say stop lifting for a bit and observe what happens. Your best bet is to see a specialist though, especially an expert on sports injuries.

Hopefully someone that's experienced this exact type of injury will chime in

Insertion points. Where the bicep muscle attaches to the forearm. Your arm is a lever system and the farther distal (away) from the fulcrum the less the muscle has to work to lift the load. We are only talking about fractions of an inch to nake a difference. Insertion points are not always exactly the same on common joints, hence the difference in myscle shape/size.

Before the extreme bicep work out I did, both of my biceps were the same size and pretty close to the same bulk and hardness. Now one is just as it was pre workout and the other feels soft and has no bulk. When I flex it basically does nothing.

Let's clear this up.
Can you NOT contract your muscle? Or are you contracting it, but it's just not hard as it should be.

During your workout did you ever experience any pain? or tingling/shooting feelings in your bicep or forearm?

or did you only notice the pain after

Ok guys. I can flex my right bicep but when I do there is no bulk and no hardness ( at all ). No definition at all. Night and day difference between right and left. I did not feel and popping or pain during workout ( other than standard tennis elbow ). So I went to the doctor today ( sports medicine ). We did X-rays and he ran some general tests ( pushing, pulling, Exc. He said I tore a good size piece of muscle fiber in my bicep. He exclaimed to me that when I try to flex or put any pressure on that area that due to the injury my muscle is not responding the way it normally would. He said my muscle is compensating for the injury by directing the pressure directly to my tendon to keep it off of my bicep ( which is why when I flex I am not getting the normal reaction of my muscle. I was told not to do Any workout that could put pressure on that area for 4 to 6 weeks. He said that because it is diverting the pressure to my tendon that if I push it and continue to workout that I have a good chance to snap my tendon. I was told once the muscle heals that my response when flexing and trying to make a muscle will slowly return to normal reaction. So I guess it’s a lot of Cardio, Abs and legs for a while. Makes me sad but better than the worse case senecio.

Damn, that's what I was afraid of. Wish you a speedy recovery man

Remember it could be worse and be a full tear, you will be back at it soon.

Really scary that you didn't even really know. Looking back were there any signs when you did it?

No Stone there wasn’t. I felt great after doing my biceps and triceps workout. Next day was a little sore in the bend of my arm at the lowest part of my bicep. (Which is the typical feel after crushing it during my workout). It wasn’t until day 3 that I noticed that I couldn’t even flex that bicep and that the bulk was not there. And the following day ( after realizing the bulk was not there ) I hit biceps again just trying to get the bulk back. Really weird IMO. I think it was doing 5 sets of 30 curls with a 35lb dumbbell on the preacher pad that did the damage. I dropped weight and went up on my reps trying to cut better before summer. And NO I don’t typically do 30 as a set even with the lower weight, I was just trying to do a burnout to end my day. Needless to say it ended a hell of a lot more than just my day. Just gonna chalk it up to a lesson learned and not push so hard in the future.

Having had both complete distal bicep tears in both arms I say congrats on catching this before it got worse. Listen to the Doctor and give it time to heal.
