Longer steroid cycles, more side effects

The chance of side effects reported by anabolic steroid users does not only increase the longer their steroid courses last. Australian researchers write in Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy that the length of the period between steroids courses is also a factor. Short recovery periods increase the risk of gynecomastia, according to the Australians.Study
The researchers questioned 564 men who used steroids and got their injection needles from primary needle and syringe program locations in the city of Sydney. Their mean age was 28 years.

Anger and irritation, sexual problems and breast growth [medical term: gynecomastia] were the most commonly reported side effects. The researchers also asked the men about the length of their cycles and their recovery periods, and then checked whether these correlated with the side effects reported by the users. Results
The longer the users' cycles, the greater their risk of sexual problems, depression and an increase in the concentration of liver enzymes.

The researchers found no relationship between cycle length and gynecomastia. But they did find a link between gynecomastia and the length of the recovery period between courses.
In the study participants with short recovery periods, breast formation was almost 4 times more common than in the study participants with longer recovery periods.
