Get Shredded!
I’m a locksmith but on the side as a money making hobby, I pan for gold and buy gold/silver if I can get good deals and sell it for more.
I have a little ad in my city weekly paper that says I buy gold/silver jewelry and coins.
Here’s the issue that my wife has with me right now and whichever way the reaction trends is how I’ll handle it.
I got a call about an hour ago from a guy who said he was given a $50 gold coin years and years ago and he never tried to use it because he didn’t think there’d be any store that would accept a $50 coin. He sent me a front and back picture of it and I asked how much he was looking to get for it. He said he had no idea, so I told him I’d give him face value for it. He wanted to negotiate with me so he said he was hoping to get $60 since it’s in good shape and has been wrapped in a plastic case this whole time. I said I’d give him $60 if he could meet me tonight. He said he’s at work until after midnight and would rather meet in the day tomorrow. I said ok. We picked and time and place in a public location and are set to make the transaction.
Here’s the rub.....the coin he has is a 1oz gold coin worth close to $2,000. My wife is pissed that I’m giving him $60 and ripping him off because he doesn’t know better. I told her that he’s the one who made the price offer to me of $60. She’s not happy...which doesn’t bother me.
Would you
A. Meet up, pay him $60 and enjoy your $1,900 in profit?
Or
B. Appease your wife and tell the guy his coin is worth $2,000 and to enjoy his new found wealth?

I don't think this is a matter of appeasing your wife.
Paying $60 knowing that your cheating someone, that's pretty low. You and I knew each other,
And I knew you did this, I would have to part ways.

Well. Re evaluate when you meet him and talk to him. If he looks rough, in dire straits, talk to him and maybe even after you tell him what it’s worth he’ll still break you a deal.

if he looks and acts like a Schmuck, fuck it. Ya live, ya learn, or ya don’t. But maybe.... maybe it’s not what it appears to be and he’s trying to pull a fast one on you?

Be an honest person.

Damn the guy is an idiot can he not use google . I would not rip him off personally and if you are asking this is question than I think you know the right thing to do . I’m not sure what a pawnshop would do , most of them around me would give him the 60 and be done with him.

Buddy youre going to have to ask yourself that question. I can't tell you what to do. obviously ripping the guy off it's not the right thing to do. Your wife is correct. But hopefully you'll make the right decision.

When things look too good to be true, they probably are. In this position I would offer him $1200. It’s a nice little fortune for him and in all fairness you should make a profit as your knowledge in how to move a coin worth 2k has value as well. If he doesn’t know the value he sure as hell doesn’t know anyone who would buy it for full value. Everyone makes out and you walk away not being a douche. Maybe take the wife for some curbside Mexican food and a few margaritas, pop a 20mg cialis and be a hero.

You know, the guy could be setting you up to be robbed yourself. Better watch out.

I conceal carry so I’m not worried. My thought was like Zazz said, a simple google search for $50 gold coin value will tell you what you’ve got. I can’t be responsible for people’s stupidity or ignorance. If you see a car in a parking lot that is worth $20,000 but is for sale for $5,000, are you going to offer them $15,000?
I’ve had this happen before with smaller coins 1/4oz and so I’m not going to be surprised if this is legit. Although I’m always careful and aware of being set up somehow. I live in a pretty well off area and the paper where my ad is, is delivered only in this area. He sounded totally coherent and intelligent, obviously just not about gold coins.
Decisions decision....damn you high moral fuckers.

Being an ethical business man will help you out in the long run. You buy at wholesale and sell at a profit. That is business. Buying a $50 coin from an ignorant old man for $50 or $60 is not buying at wholesale and is not even close to a fair price. I realize you do have to make a profit, but if you made 20% on every transaction, you would be killing it. Making a 97% markup due to some old man's lack of sophistication is just wrong.

You never know if this guy has 20 more in a closet hidden away or distributed among friends and family that might come your way of you treat him right.

Note I am suggesting that you make a profit, and a healthy one. I do not suggest knowingly ripping some body off.

Your car example is not even close. Gold coins do not contain hidden rust and other things that would alert you that $5000 means you are buying $35,000 in restoration costs to get your $20,000 car restored and up to full value. And 3% means the car would be at $600, not $5000.

How would you want somebody to treat your old father or grandfather in this same situation? Or you when you get older. We won't all be the same as now in a few decades.

What comes around goes around.

If nothing else, look at this as an opportunity to do the right thing and find a new person who will promote your business for you. If the product is legit and he's not trying to scam you...and you give him a small fortune for it...he is going to repeat that story to all his friends and family. You will now be the straight shooting honest reputable guy to take gold and silver to in your town. Otherwise, he will eventually find out how bad a screwing he took and you will be the asshole that he tells everyone to avoid.

When I was an auto tech I would buy broken down cars from customers that did not want to fix them. I always told them my plans were to fix and sell, or keep for my own use. I also made sure they were aware of the value and what i was willing to pay and why. I found most people appreciated my honesty and sold me their cars. Being a professional shouldn't mean knowing more than somebody and taking advantage of them. How would you feel if your Doctor did that to you? Just sayin....
You gotta do what you feel is right, but the fact you are asking the question leads me to believe you are conflicted at least. I would say be honest, and do what one member suggested.... sell it and give him half. Even if it you tell him upfront you will not pay that amount but will reward his trust by selling it to you by paying after you make your profit.

What Hot Rod said

Its a setup!!
John Quiñones from “What would you do” is going to walk up on you with cameras and see how you handled it!!

If your business is to buy and sell gold then make him a fair offer like a business should. Don’t rip him off

what would one of those cash for gold stores pay? I'm pretty sure they wouldnt give you market value for it. I bought my wife a wedding ring in reseda ca guy said the rock was worth 7k I paid 5k. after I got married my wife said she preferred white gold so we went to a shop in vegas and the lady said she would give me 1500k for it. so what I'm saying is I should have done the research its my fault, I dont fault these jewelers because they mark this shit up, its the same as buying a car from a dealership.

It might be a replica and he knows it. I find it very hard to believe that this guy couldn’t simply google the fuckin thing and find out what it could potentially be worth. I’d probably give him the 60 bucks to be honest, that’s showbiz baby and I’m not responsible for making grown ass men make good decisions lol

Only a total scumbag would rip off someone like that. Your wife is right!

nobody in the history of possessing gold , made zero effort to make sure they weren’t getting a bad deal. This dude is gonna shoot this mother fucker dead when he shows up... lol

Well, here’s what happened.......

I met him where we decided (parking lot of a nearby shopping center. His coin was real and in a protected case. He was about 25-27 years old, drove a brand new Acura TL and had nice clothes on. He wasn’t hurting at all. I looked at his coin for a minute and said “If I gave you $1500 for this coin, would you be happy?” He laughed like I was fucking with him. I asked why he called my ad. He said he was reading the paper at work, saw my ad and it reminded him that he had a gold coin from years and years ago as a gift he got and he didn’t even remember who gave it to him. I told him what he really had and I said pawn shops pay 60-75% of spot value. I showed him spot value which at the time was just above $2000. I said you’ll get probably $1400 from them, I’ll give you $1500. He laughed again thinking I’m fucking with him still. I told him that I was going to give him his $60 and walk, but a large group of people who inject illegal substances into themselves have more morals than anybody would ever have imagined.
Lol...not really....I said it was hard not taking your coin and making a ton of profit but I wanted to be fair. I handed him an envelope with $1500 cash in it but I added a gold coin sheet I printed out at home about coin values and put it in with the money. He was shitting himself and no doubt he has bought himself an ounce of weed and a fifth of Makers Mark on the way home. He’ll get wasted and go out later to get some food....drunk, high and careless and end up killing some innocent people with his car. So I hope you’re all happy.
Honestly though, it felt good to do this. I could tell the guy was happy, appreciative and shocked. I told him that the next one he’s going to have to give me a deal on. He said you bet. So I’m just going to stash this one and cash it in a few years when it’s up over $3,500. 👍🏼

dude... I told you... if he was hurting , be square with him. He’s a young dumb full of cum Acura driver... 60 bucks... he’ll prolly try to fuck your daughter at some point... some lessons are tough to learn..

epic fail

I’d have ripped him off even harder... be like bro.. this thing is fake... I’ll give you a 6 pack and a pack of old golds for it.. later bro

Ya did the right thing...with a dude that deserved less... doesn’t it feel good? This is what Jesus felt when he shut the Jew shops down at the temple.

The Holy Spirit flows through your veins.... live it up. One step closer to the streets that are paved with your gold coinage.

yes, I have 2 personalities... the same as you, apparently.

bravo son, bravo

May not mean much to you, but I am proud of you. Surprisingly yes guys like us tend to have morals even if we led shit lives prior or shoot "100% legal substances in our bodies" lol

Good deal but he is a fool why not hold on to the thing especially since he wasn’t hurting for money. If he is really buying makers mark send him my way .
