I’m a locksmith but on the side as a money making hobby, I pan for gold and buy gold/silver if I can get good deals and sell it for more.
I have a little ad in my city weekly paper that says I buy gold/silver jewelry and coins.
Here’s the issue that my wife has with me right now and whichever way the reaction trends is how I’ll handle it.
I got a call about an hour ago from a guy who said he was given a $50 gold coin years and years ago and he never tried to use it because he didn’t think there’d be any store that would accept a $50 coin. He sent me a front and back picture of it and I asked how much he was looking to get for it. He said he had no idea, so I told him I’d give him face value for it. He wanted to negotiate with me so he said he was hoping to get $60 since it’s in good shape and has been wrapped in a plastic case this whole time. I said I’d give him $60 if he could meet me tonight. He said he’s at work until after midnight and would rather meet in the day tomorrow. I said ok. We picked and time and place in a public location and are set to make the transaction.
Here’s the rub.....the coin he has is a 1oz gold coin worth close to $2,000. My wife is pissed that I’m giving him $60 and ripping him off because he doesn’t know better. I told her that he’s the one who made the price offer to me of $60. She’s not happy...which doesn’t bother me.
Would you
A. Meet up, pay him $60 and enjoy your $1,900 in profit?
Or
B. Appease your wife and tell the guy his coin is worth $2,000 and to enjoy his new found wealth?
