The U.S. government has a database of supplements on the market. The database also lists which ingredients these products contain according to their labels. In this database, Pieter Cohen, a critical researcher who has more than once fought the anger of the supplement industry, looked up all supplements containing 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin.
Cohen bought the products available and then analyzed them in his lab.
Results
Of the 4 supplements analyzed by Cohen, 3 were found not to contain 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin.

In contrast, 2 supplements - one containing 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin and one devoid of 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin - contained a substance not listed on the labels: diosgenin.In nature, 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin does not occur. But in a laboratory you can make 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin from laxogenin, a substance of natural origin. And because laxogenin is relatively expensive, companies prefer to make 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin from diosgenin.
Often these comapnies do not or do not properly purify their product afterwards, American researchers reported in 2019. And thanks to Cohen, we now know that some manufacturers apparently don't even bother anymore to synthesize 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin. They just put diosgenin in their capsules.
Conclusion
"Supplements categorized in the NIH supplement database as containing 5-alpha-hydroxy-laxogenin were inaccurately labeled and contained a variety of potentially pharmaceutically active compounds with unpredictable health effects", writes Cohen.
