One of this week's long Over due topics will be recovery.

What are some things that you focus on for recovery when you're out of the gym cause, that's when you grow!

This is a great topic and I hope to learn some pointers from others with this one..

For myself it all starts with that signal or sign that it's rest time.. To be straight forward, I'd love to say that when I blast I'm going balls deep 10,12 or 14 weeks, but that's not the case for me..I can go a hard 4-5 weeks and it hits that mark where I need more than just 1 day off, I'll toss in 2-3 or even do a split for that week, than rebound once I feel back on point..During this phase and ALL off days and down time I can 110% honestly say and be real that I focus on my macro's, to the point it's an obsession..I have to have food with me 24/7..Not so much sups but whole food..If the wife and I are out running errands, her mind is worrying about "do we have enough time to get this stuff done and grabs the kids too, blah blah blah" , me on the other hand I'm scooping out trying to remember all the food joints we passed just in case I need to dip off.. I literally have clued to my side a half gal (2 x 1 qts bottles) of water and Gatorade powder mixed (watered down basically half the servings), of course I refill it, but walking around with a gal is rather silly.. I take my down time set myself up for the days ahead, I have little Tupperware containers I'll pre mix my blended oats, protein powder, powered peanut butter and I make little serving cups that are ready to mix, I'll stack anywhere from 8-10 of them off to the side.. I recently joined back into BJJ but dropped out "again" due to timing and over training, my recovery time was just not there, it seemed I was always on the go and I dislike feeling that way..Im a OCD routine kinda dude..

When I'm getting a session on I'm in zone, its my Zen, like an alternate universe..Ear buds in,eyes closed and rocking back and forth to my music between sets looking very unapproachable and odd, just smashing demons in my head, preparing for the next demon to smash on that upcoming set..My lifts can be anywhere from 45mins, to 1:45, but when it's on, it's ON!

Sleep has always been a battle my whole life, been on sleep meds most my adult life.. Recently I had to employ some meds I'd rather not talk about because of their nature, but I can honestly say 110% I gauge and use them for sleep ONLY..I watch that clock, soon as it's around that time, meds are down, small snack/meal with gaba or other sups.. and its lights out..with the addition of some peptides, sleep aid, sleep sups, and a small protien/BCAA based meal, I'm out like a light and ready to go in the AM..

I'm feeling the best I ever have in a very long time.. for now, this is what works for me!

I find even when sleep is difficult, I will just "rest" relax the next day, I won't fuss or stress it, I'll just take it easy.. and for me just relaxing or unplugging is "rest" in my book..Of course we need all phases of sleep but in perfect world that would be ideal..
when rest is an issue, just relax, plenty of fluids, meet your macros and give your "physical and mental" state a brake!

More sleep (or rest periods) I agree with but if you are properly ingesting protein at regular intervals then more isn't going to make a difference.
I would also recommend massage and myofascial release (if you need it).

I have to tell you my wife is an absolute doll, I lay my big fat ass right across the sofa and she rubs my glutes. Mostly because of oil volume, or I have her play with my ears (it's a comfort thing I had since I was a kid, rolls eyes!) All the while she's watching TV and it just puts me at ease.. on a high-volume day with life's stressors my little angel is right there for Big Poppa, no questions asked..

I'm done with fast paced life and unnecessary bullshit.. I'm finding down time and relaxation is extremely complimentary to my Target and goals.. it's extremely healthy for the cognitive thought process..

Sort of like me, but sex before bed gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and knocks me out.

Forget sleep aids, Xanax, melatonin or whatever I have tried in the past, best sleep I have is after sex.

I wish I was able to have that, in fact sex before bed is extremely rare.. I seriously can probably count on one hand how many times I've done that with my wife.. we have kids and they always slept with us :( :( little fuckers are snoring like a bug in a rug while Daddy has the edge of the bed with the corner of the blanket..

Sleep aids are hit or miss with me because of my chemical imbalance.. I don't entirely agree with them in fact I'm against them, but I'm a hypocrite at the same time because I'm temporary employing some at the moment... My problem is it's not actually getting to sleep or sleeping itself, it's a matter of the gears that continuously turn.. if I doze off and wake up my gears immediately go, random thoughts. I never have difficulty sleeping, it's just my thought process. Now that I'm able to temporarily subside that I'm sleeping 6hrs out of the 8 or 9 that I'm laying down.. sometimes crawling out of bed I resemble that of a turtle that's trapped on his back, but that's nothing a cup of black coffee can't fix..

Are you me?? That’s exactly how it is for me too brother... my kids cock block me so much. And my wife ain’t down with spontaneity....it used to bother me but I have become a sex camel over the past few years...it does help increase my aggression tho lol not that it’s a good thing... fml haha

Don't get me wrong, I have used Xanax and it did work great, but how long can you/me do that?

As to Gaba that stuff barely works with me and usually get a hangover from it.

I have an opinion on subject this but not rooted in science.

Maybe tomorrow morning.

Its a true story for most of us men.. When Skippy mentioned that comment, I literally asked the wife "Hun, how many times you think we have had night sex"..I asked her twice (shes deep into her candy crushing), she laughed and said maybe a handful..But when the kids aren't home, it's on..we're like animals, the holy mother pic on my wall is seriously crying for a good reason!

Gym aggression? don't get me started.. I'm a mid day session kinda guy, and the gym is full of nothing but stay home mommies in yoga pants doing completely unnecessary (butt very necessary) leg routines! :whip::whip:

Im right there with you on the part for "how long can we do that".. Like I said, for NOW, its assisting, I will remove it soon, but for the moment my gears are stopping, and I'm employing these just as needed no more, no less.. I'm actually gauging and learning a bit as I go with how to rest and unplug.. It's such a huge aspect with our way of life having the need for rest, but its necessary for everybody really, not saying that those in fitness are more entitled to have better rest, but compared to the average Joe, a HUGE % of us won't be able to function doing what we do.. When I hear a random dude bitch about how he's tired, I just wanna yoke a bloke.. Below is a quote from Rich that I often think about..Not that I cared much about the guy, but he did say it how it is, many times over!..

Hearing you guys having sleep issues, is making me feel really blessed. I slept 13 hours today. Could have slept more but had to go for work.

I push myself hard.....very hard..but by Friday....I don't want to step into a gym. I take weekends off and every Wednesday off. During my training days, I'll kill it. Taking time off is key to my recovery. My biggest problem is sleep....I need more and can't seem to get it....my personal responsibilities won't allow it right now. Lots of the time..I'm running on adrenaline. Unfortunately, I'll use more gear to counter my lack of sleep recovery.

V,

My wife said the same thing and she also told me she finds me attractive when I wear my glasses.. WTF? When she first met me it was the tattoos.. now she likes me reading a book with glasses..

I totally understand man and I'm right there with you.. you know me on a personal level so you know what I deal with regarding other life stressors.. responsibilities can be overwhelming and very taxing.. this way of life has been shoved down our throats and it has became acceptable as being the staple and the standard in what we all need to do to achieve things.. even though that's a false sense of reality, unfortunately if you slip up because you disapprove of this way of life someone is going to kick you Spartan Style and Jump Right In Your Grave and take your position in life... The rat race ain't no joke... I personally know people that get on the train at 4: 30 in the morning just to make it into New York City, just to start their day running around like a lunatic, taking the train back, then jumping in their car and driving home.. by the time they get home it's almost 8- 9 p. M. And they have to do it all over again .

I refuse to live that way anymore not that I ever have but damn near close to it..

I had a friend that had another friend that knew of a doctor that was dying, this guy was a specialist like recognized in the world... On his Deathbed one of his life regrets was the following "I wish I would have ate that burger or steak"...
He was basically saying he wished he didn't tell everybody how they should be living, in lieu he wish he could just go back to living... My takeaway note from that is, slow down and eat that burger if you want to because you're entitled to it!

if I doze off and wake up my gears immediately go, random thoughts.

This is my exact problem. I compare it to popping the clutch on a car. From zero to 100mph in 3 secs. Sleep study scheduled this week, so we'll see how that goes. Probably headed for a cpap.

Sleep has always been my issue as well. I'm in the gym only 4 days, so 3 days out of it is great for recovery. (After 40 years of training, and my age, more is not better for me).
I have Ambien and Xanax only for the times I am really wired at night and know I wont be falling asleep. Some of the OTC stuff has been working well for me recently, powders like "Mummified" by Killer Labz, or Redcon1's "Fade Out".
Of course I top it off w/ a Unisom liquid tab, or two Aleeve PM's. I eat clean, I dont obsess over food (eat when Im hungry, which is often) but dont count macro's (Im not a bodybuilder, just a gym rat). I find that "sleep improvement" helps me to be and feel my best, and be recovered. When I am in the gym, I hit it as hard as I can...

Well said my friend.💪

Recovery..... Ugh so much to talk about.

Stretching - before, during, after training. Loaded stretching during training after I finish with a body part has helped a lot. Not only for mobility, cause mine is awful, but stretching helps aid in building muscle on a few different levels.

Sleep - as much as you can get. I've tried all the otc stuff. GABA, hungover feeling. Phenibut, hungover feeling and pretty easy to form a dependance on. Melatonin, helps, no record breaker but can help. Magnesium and zinc, both seem to help me sleep better and they've been used for this reason a long time even though science doesn't really support it. Naps, naps naps.

Massage - I've been having ART therapy done regularly, when I'm not a broke sumbitch, and this has made the biggest impact I believe. Massage is great but the ART does a much better job at breaking up the bound up tissue.

Diet - cut out shit food. Get in as much of your vitamins and minerals as you can through diet. Reduce things that cause inflammation like excess carbs when you can. Add in ubiquinol which itself is anti inflammatory.

Don't train 7 days a week. Hell don't even train 5 days a week. Don't do cardio. Fix your diet and you don't have to.

So much....

Bro,

Do you think your ART therapy assists in breaking up scar tissue from so many injections?
