Homebrewers:Hang in there. You can buy top notch equipment too

Over the last year I have been able, by paying really close attention to eBay auctions, to acquire pro level equipment at prices affordable to the smallest homebrewers.

Brandtech Handistep digital pipette $115 (the sterile pipettes are cheaper than what I was paying for 60ml syringes)
    Mettler-Toledo AE240 balance $152
    Brinkman/Polytron/Kinematic homogenizer with aggregate. $115
Stuart Melting Point Test apparatus (2 of them) $94 and $25 Seriously!
Büchi Melting Point Test apparatus $550
Lab ovens/2cu ft (2 of them) $199 each
Liberty 4015 laminar flow workstation, 6' and flawless $1100

Check out the costs of these things online.
The only things I bought new are heated stir plates and peristaltic pumps. These are Chinese. All the other equipment is European or American made.

You might have to source new batteries as I did for things like the pipette ($15/ea) or tidy up some of these used items but the bottom line is that it is possible to get great equipment for stupid cheap prices.

I am currently in a futile attempt at acquiring an affordable Crimpentstein.

I actually scored a crimpenstein off Ebay for like $150. Works great but the dipshit selling it couldn't tell me what size the crimper was. Turned out it wasn't the right size (13mm) so ended up spending another $200 to get the right size crimper (20mm flip off). However still cheaper than a brand new one.
