So is it possible to build large quads without squats? In my youth I did squats but like most I missed a lot of my leg days:) Been lifting again for about 1 1/2 yrs or so but my 48 yr old knees just hate squats. Can do presses but motion of squats just kills knees.
Thanks

Can you do goblet squats with dumbells? I can't squat and do goblet squats with 45 55 65 lbs dumbells then drop sets at the end till I can't walk.

You can only do what you can do. I am older than you, and I was having trouble growing my quads without squats. It was the addition of squats that added an inch this year.

How do you feel with front squats? Or hacks? Lunges?

Lunges seem to be ok. Maybe it's the weight difference I'm using though. Hack squats ok. Seems to be when I get parellel that it starts hurting on squats. Never did a lot of hack squats. Years ago high school football coach said they were bad on knees. I know that was in the one room school house and they never seemed to bother me as much but his words right or wrong kinda stuck with me. Mostly been doing leg presses and extensions. Tried to lighten the load but still when I get close to parellel knees start hurting, not like muscle pain. Maybe old Arthur in those knees? But they start screaming "u dumb old fucker, stop that"

Ok, wait. Are we talking about pain in the actual movement or pain in your knees that remains for weeks on end? If you say "just at the bottom of the movement," my advice is to stop whining and get to it.

Seriously. They can hurt sometimes when doing that. Also, make sure your form is good.

Do plenty of warmups with light weight.

I thought you were talking about some old knee injury or something.

I am around your age, and yeah, they hurt some down there at the bottom of the movement. I do them anyway.

Nandralone helps, too.

At our age shit just hurts sometimes. If I avoided anything that hurts, I would not be able to lift weights at all. Maybe light dumbbell curls or something, but that is about it. I hurt. I lift.

Start squatting.

Do not avoid the best exercises.

Try some knee wraps and squat. Good form will reduce the stress on knees.

Get on a bicycle and ride hills. Your legs will grow. Look at professional cyclist legs. They don't live in the gym.

Bulgarian squats are a good option cause you don't need as much weight. If you can lunge you should be able to do anything lol. Just start light and progress slowly. Concentrate more on form and rep quality then on weight. Make sure your knees don't try to come together on your way up. That can cause strain

Well it sounds like lunges could be your thing. I remember my 1st trainer making me do Tri sets with leg press lunges leg press and I grew like crazy.

Regarding of what you're hitting get a good warm up in - especially being an older guy.

I'm 10 min on the stepper
20 rep leg extension set
10 X 2 rep warm up for squats-press-deads whatever before its work time.

First and foremost ..I am old too bro and years of abusing my body are taking a toll on me now...But If you're experiencing knee pain that just doesn't seem right, you really should go to a doc and make sure there isn't an underline issue before embarking on an epic journey to huge quads[emoji12]. Ensuring you don't have any contraindications for the exercises discussed. . Most common theme I run into for my age group is patella tracking and meniscus issues.

With that said... Although I'm a huge supporter of foundational exercises like the squat, there are other ways to achieve great gains in size and strength. There are many many ways to skin a cat...here are my personal go to's besides squats. Lunges lunges lunges.. Huge fan of them and multi angle lunges, not just walking lunges. Step ups with a loaded barbell on your back. Goblet squats, mentioned in a prior post. Single leg drops, split jumps ( in the smith machine if needed for support). I personally like giant sets when not going crazy heavy. I'll do 4-5 of these without rest.. Maybe add in wall squats with the Swiss ball (30 reps) in the end of the set to burn them out good. I know a lot of people love the sled and press, but that damn thing is always plugged up with hipsters and texters, so I rarely do them. Solid work though, and truly a way to avoid knee pain while gaining strength and size.
As a bonus I agree with Seattle.. Ride that bike, it is Great for your knees! Spin classes are brutal for the quads and good for the ticker. . I try to get at least one a week.
Just my opinions ... Take care of them knees bro, you only get one set for free! Thank you for not skipping leg day!
