ok guys,

so I have been going retarded heavy lately trying to get ready for meet. I had a tweak in my trap that has happened before, and went away on its own. This time though, it I am afraid, has actually turned into something.

It progressed into a dull pain below my left bicep ad ultimately has caused numbness in my fingers from time to time.

I have been to the chiropractor several times, and no relief. I can be sitting down with my elbows on my knees and look up, and I can feel the nerve running thru my shoulder and down past my elbow. This makes me think the damage is somewhere close to the base of my neck?

has anyone had this problem? how was the corrective surgery. I read that it is an outpatient surgery now, and immediate results are seen.

it is bad enough that I was warmin up today on bench with 225 and favoring my un-affected side.

please chime in.

Sorry Bro
No comment on that one
Hope u can find Dr that knows about that
Good luck

I've had similar numbness, but never with pain. Just numbness in fingers of both arms, or one arm, outer two fingers, or inner two + thumb, or all five. Make sense? I think there are two major nerve bundles per arm that radiate out of the lower neck, and tension-induced compression of the nerves causes the problem and can afflict anywhere from 1 to all 4 of those nerves.

I can flex the hand and arms all day and not make a dent but stretching the neck just right, to the side and DEEP, can release the tinglng numbness in a matter of seconds. Either halfway or a complete cure. In fact I do this most mornings now due to sleeping wrong or the pillow not being thick enough, but the solution is so easy I haven't worried much about it.

Physical therapist a few years ago pinpointed the source of the problem and said basically get off the computer so much, go out inline skating, running, swimming, or whatever moves your arms and neck and you're likely to get rid of the issue. He was right. Following his advice makes it a much rarer issue. He also said it's just like a kinked hose and nothing to get upset about that maybe the numbness will go permanent. The nerves stay alive and kicking so long as they have a blood supply and this is not a blood depletion issue, just nerve transmission.

Have you tried routine deep stretches in all directions on your head/neck? Do it while you have the numbness and see what happens.

I have but it doesn't work for me I'm passed that stage.

choco,

thank for reply. I have only been to chiropractor. I think the root/origin of the problem lies closer to the base of my head/neck.

I can move my head a certain way and feel the path of the nerve. I think the pinch/trauma to nerve lies in this area.

going to regular doctor today to get referral to a specialist.

Definitely not your ulnar nerve.

Coming from your neck possibly. Nerve is "pinched" possibly by a bulging or herniated disc. But if you have no neck pain and it is the entire hand that goes numb, then consider thoracic outlet syndrome. Look it up. Plenty of stretches for it.

If it is the neck region, do home traction to decompress the nerve.

BTW, nerves take a long time to heal, so don't expect immediate results.

def not ur ulnar nerve, that would affect your wrist aka carpal tunnel, probably a herniation in your c spine, u need a c spine mri and see pain management, they do medicines like neurontin (gabapentin) it helps with nerve pain, they also do injections into the neck using fluoroscopy (real time xray) and surgery would be the last step, they remove a small piece of bone that's causing the impingement that's called a laminectomy, this is all of course after you tried like 6 mos of physical therapy, hopefully the pt does it for u bud, hope u feel better soon

Is the nerve feeling painful? Scary? If not, and I might be barking up the wrong tree here, do whatever you can to loosen up all those muscles in your neck. Deep stretches in every direction, using your hands to pull the head to the side, front, back, etc. Have a friend/gf massage the neck deeply. Maybe try some arm movement exercise like swimming.

The thing is, that therapy if it works is by far the easiest and cheapest. Worth a shot.

Like I mentioned before, my problem got diagnosed just as your own suspicions have it: Never issue at base of neck. But solution is pretty simple. All the numbness literally goes away in a few seconds once I find the offending tense muscle. Of course, I'm lucky it's not a herniation or such...
