Is blood donation alone a way to significantly lower platelets or does one have to actually donate platelets. I really don't want to have then stick at 13guage in my vein for an hour+...

Donating platelets doesn't hurt any more than donating blood... it just takes longer. Just sack up and help out some cancer patients.
