that does seem to be the most tried and true methodThe best way is to pin it
I am a bichem major. As has been stated melting point is actually a very good way to ID any sunstance. But it requires the correct equipment to do right. A more effective but more costly way would be to send a sample to a third party lab and have them do mass spec, nmr, liquid chrom, etc on it.
Isn't there an obviously inherent problem sending these powders or oils for testing?

Yes and no. Depends on the lab doing the testing, and also exactly what is being tested. Now I would never send anything say like cocaine off to be tested, but I would send many aas. I work in a biology lab and we often send substances off to be tested. You have to remember you are not sending it off to law enforcement to get tested. These are private companies in the business to make money and they usually don't ask questions. I also never send a sample off to have a complete sample ID analysis done, but just have them give me the NMR, mass spec, etc and read the results myself. For the lab it is just one of a couple hundred samples they will run that day and they wont get caught up too much with what exactly it is.
Your lab just let's a sample or two of unknown suspended hormone product ( or powder) through during a regular rotation? Man, you work for a chill lab, or one that isn't monitored in any way. Crazyness

No you misunderstood. I would never send aas through my lab because I doubt it would go unnoticed by my supervisor. I meant that i wouldnt be too concerned to send it to the company as an individual. I was just referring to the fact that when we do send lab substances off that is how it works. And I agree it is cost prohibitive, I was simply saying it it the most accurate way to tell exactly what a substance is. Personally I would just run a blood test and see if it's doing what it is supposed to long before having it tested, but I would not be scared of sending it off if I were to get it tested.
Haha......were you starting to have a stroke at the end of that post?.......Take my advice, and dont send it off to a random lab. Or if you can, send it to a GOOD friend in said lab for him to run.
Mass spec or spectrophotometry will do the best job on this, and will identify the active hormone, and if you have a blank oil vial, you can hey the concentration. For raw powders, you need to suspend then in a know carrier (which you blank on the machine , and hey can get an accurate read based on UV absorption. This method is idealnfor finished oils, forn awbowder, mass spec is the only reliable option. Rawvtesting is ddangerous and illegal, and make aurei onanonymizebtoubacriciriea
