MSM, growth hormone and IGF-1 | Stronger bones, stronger muscles?
msm.gif
According to a handful of human studies, MSM supplementation accelerates muscle recovery after intense exercise. That may be because MSM reduces the effect of cortisol, we wrote a few days ago. Another possibility is that MSM enhances the action of growth hormone and IGF-1 in muscle tissue, we speculate today after reading a spectacular in vitro study. MSM appears to stimulate bone development through this mechanism.Study

The research from which you can deduce that MSM protects muscle cells against cortisol has been done by the group of South Korean molecular scientist Young Mok Yang, who has published several times on the effects of MSM on different types of cells. The study we are talking about now is also from Yang and his coworkers. Results
The researchers exposed multiple bone cell types to different concentrations of MSM. They found no evidence that MSM was harmful to the cells.

In test tubes containing nutrients for bone cells, MSM accelerated the development of the bone stem cells into bone tissue.

Mechanism
Above you can see how MSM stimulates bone cells. MSM forces the cells to produce more receptors for growth hormone [GHR] and for IGF-1 [IGF-1R]. UMR-106 is a type of bone cell.

MSM activates a series of genes involved in bone tissue biosynthesis via growth hormone and IGF-1.

MSM initiates all these processes by converting the transcription factor STAT5b. When the researchers exposed bone cells to MSM while silencing the STAT5b gene, the effects of MSM disappeared. You can see this above. Conclusion
"Although further studies are required to clarify the in vivo actions and mechanisms, MSM may become a drug candidate for treating bone-depleting diseases, as it is expected to not only enhance bone formation but also suppress bone resorption", the Koreans write.

"Future clinical studies will determine whether some patients with decreased bone mass due to other reasons will benefit from treatment with MSM alone or in combination with growth hormone."
Would MSM also enhance the action of IGF-1 and growth hormone in muscle cells? Perhaps, according to molecular research from the University of Auckland on the role of STAT5b in muscle growth. [Skelet Muscle. 2019 Jun 24;9(1):19.]
